Church History

In Church History, students learn how the ascended Christ seated at God’s right hand works in history to gather, defend and preserve His Church. Narration is also the preferred methodology for Church History so that children may hear the stories which show the LORD at work throughout the age to fulfill His plan of salvation through Christ Jesus, His Son.

John Calvin uses the CARE Church History program for its Grades 1-4 curriculum. The unit headings are the same for each grade but the stories are different. The units are as follows:

Unit 1 – Church Life

Unit 2 – People in Church History

Unit 3 – Mission

John Calvin uses a locally developed Church History program for Grades 5-8. It follows a chronological study of Church History from the early Christian Church to present-day developments in the North America.

Grade 5 – The first 400 years of the Christian Church

Grade 6 – The Middle Ages

Grade 7 – The Age of Reformation

Grade 8 – European and North American Developments; the origin of the Canadian Reformed Churches and its sister churches.

The content is organized around the following themes: the church’s struggle to maintain right doctrine and government, the church’s struggle to be a light in this world, and the struggle of the individual to be a living member of Christ’s Church.
