General News

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,… You are serving the Lord Christ.  Colossians 3:23, 24b

This week began with the difficult news of the passing of Evan DeBoer. He was a student here at John Calvin Christian School and there are many fond memories of him.   He has completed his earthly journey, and while this is difficult to understand we know that this is all part of God’s master plan. We pray that God will comfort the DeBoer family during these difficult times as they lay to rest the body of our young brother.

This weekend Seraya Schutten will be celebrating her birthday.   She has not been able to join us at school for the last number of weeks due to an appendix surgery as well as a subsequent surgery.   We give thanks for the work of the medical professionals and we pray that they may be guided by the hand of the great physician.  May he continue to grant healing.

We are heading towards the middle of December.  On Wednesday we hope to have the final group of students go skating. The grade 8 class hopes to head out for an afternoon of skating. This has been an enjoyable experience for the school and it was excellent to see the younger students being helped by the older students.  What a blessing.

On Wednesday we will also celebrate Pizza Day.  I am sure that this will be a welcomed change for parents and students alike. We thank the Ladies Auxiliary for organizing this.

I believe that is all for this week.  May God be praised through our worship this weekend! JVI

This week!

Classroom News

Kindergarten

Everyone in kindergarten has now had a birthday and the students couldn’t be more excited to have a classroom full of 5 year olds! This week we could also celebrate my birthday. Thanks for all of the love, cards and colourful pictures! The chalkboard is full of beautiful creations from the students! This past week we did an assessment in Language Arts and many of the students are struggling to remember all of the sounds that we have learned so far. Flashcards can be very beneficial in helping the students to memorize these sounds. Please let me know if you would like to have a set of flashcards for your child to practice the sounds at home. The students have made so much progress in learning numbers 0-10. They are becoming much more confident in these numbers! Thanks for all your help with this! If you have a minute, take some time to look at a video that Mrs. Visser has put on the Google Classroom showing you all the artwork on display in our hallways or you are always more than welcome to come and take a look in person. Have a great weekend everyone. JB/SV

Please continue to practice reading with your child often.

Grade 2

This week in our Church History lessons, we were able to complete our unit on the Worship Service. The students learned about the sacraments and the tasks of elders and deacons. Next, we will turn our attention back to the ministry of Jesus. In our Art classes, both classes have now been able to enjoy designing a mug and then being treated to a nice cup of hot chocolate from their teachers! In Math classes, we will be learning how to tell time. This can be somewhat of a challenge for some students, since we live in such a digital age. We’ll spend a couple weeks on this concept to really help them understand. That’s all for this week! BV/RG

Grade 3

We had a busy week in grade 3. Our Bible test went very well!! We have turned to our next Bible unit called “Joseph”. Learning our times tables keeps us hopping, clapping and singing. It is great to see the children mastering the first few times tables. Keep up the good practices, boys and girls. In Science we may stand in awe of how God created the respiratory system. Did you know we breathe in and out about 20,000 times per day? We are truly fearfully and wonderfully made and may praise God for it. Our winter scenes turned out beautifully in art class!! Fitness and scooter boards were a lot of fun in phys.ed class. A highlight for this week is reading about Little Willy, Grandfather and Searchlight. Ask us all about our novel study. Wishing you a wonderful weekend and blessed Sunday.

Grade 6

As we wrap up our week with a trip to the Canadian Warplane Museum, we continue to march forward to Christmas! It’s hard to believe that there are only 2 more weeks before Christmas break. With that said, we will be finishing up a number of different things in Grade 6 during these final couple weeks, so please be on the lookout for quizzes, assignments, and tests that may be coming up in the near future. Have a great weekend!

Grade 7

Luther has been summoned to the Diet of Worms to answer to his Emperor for his “heretical” views; will he recant? We move from global climate factors to local climate factors in Geography and look closely at living above and below the escarpment between two lakes. Students are putting their finishing touches on their stir stick bridges and will evaluate their group work. There is excitement in the air about our planned ROM. trip on Tuesday and the students have been placed in groups; please remember the pick up time from JCS. Enjoy your weekend.

Grade 8

Another week has flown by! Students are working to prepare for the Science Fair by writing up a second abstract on an experiment we watched on YouTube. It was a fascinating look at ‘hatching’ a chicken in a glass so all stages of development could be observed. Life really is a miracle! We wrapped up Chapter 2 with a Science test Wednesday and they were retuned today. In math we continue to work with data and displaying it in a helpful way. Next week we look forward to our trip to the ROM on Tuesday, and skating Wednesday afternoon. Have a great weekend. MJ, AL.
