General News

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,… You are serving the Lord Christ.  Colossians 3:23, 24b

We have passed the midway mark of January already. The snow that was welcomed last week has bid a hasty retreat with the warmer weather and rain. This has made for some soggy fields and I am sure has led to “soakers” and wet clothing coming home. We receive everything in season.

This week we will resume Early Years Morning.  On Tuesday, January 24 we look forward to welcoming you to the gym.  The morning is designed for preschool aged children and their parents.  The camaraderie and activities have been well received.  We look forward to seeing you there.

We have been looking at ways to update the graphical design of the News & Views magazine.  We are looking for someone who has graphic design expertise to help us. If you do please reach out to me about this opportunity.

Basketball season is coming to JCCS.  We have two teachers who are coordinating coaching the teams.  Mr. Joosse and Mrs.K. Kelly will be leading these practices.  We are hoping that there are a few more volunteers to help with the coaching of these teams. If you would like to help with the coaching, please reach out to us about this opportunity.  The tournament will take place on March 24th.

For all the parents that like to keep on top of dress up days On the week of February 20th we hope to enjoy a themed week around books. On Feb 23rd we have a book character dress up day.   Hopefully with this notice we can avoid some of the last minute scramble to find the dress up clothes.

On Saturday Mrs. Blokker hopes to celebrate her birthday.  We give thanks for the work that she does at the school and pray that God will bless her in the upcoming year!

I believe that is all for this week.  May God continue to bless and strengthen us in the upcoming week. JVI

Classroom News

Kindergarten

On Thursday and Friday the students entered through their usual school doors but the entrance to the hallway was transformed into a bear cave! Look for the pictures of the transformation on Google Classroom as well as the JCCS Instagram account! Throughout the day, students could be heard saying “this is the best day ever!” We graphed the colours and sizes of teddy bears. We found puzzle pieces that fit together to make a giant Paddington Bear. We read “Brown Bear, Brown Bear” and created our own brown bears using forks, paper and brown paint. The highlight of the day though was probably eating together on the picnic blanket in the activity room! So much excitement and so much fun was had by teachers and students alike. Over the course of the next week, your child will be taking extra language arts papers home. If you have time to do these at home, can you please do these papers as it helps the students remember and memorize letter sounds. I also will be posting on the Google Classroom links for the Jolly Phonics songs that we learn for each of the letters. If you have time throughout the day, please play these sounds in the background while your child is playing. The more times the students are exposed to these sounds the better it will be for them in their efforts to learn how to read. Here is a look at what is on the schedule for next week:

Monday – SH: Aubrey

Tuesday – SH: Kailey

Wednesday – GREEN DAY! Moms on the schedule for snack are KA: Becky DeBoer and KB: Kristy Spoelstra

Thursday – SH: Sophia

Friday – SH: Emerson

Have a great weekend everyone. JB/SV

Grade 1

We saw some sun this week! It might have been a bit gloomy again these past few days but we were so happy to have been able to see and enjoy the sun and snow together. Grade 1 is hoping for more snow to come soon as they are looking forward to being able to sled on Mount Calvin. Every day we inch closer and closer to 100 day. More info will be coming home soon about this exciting day. This coming week our memory work is quite long; it is familiar, however, we want to remind you to take the time to practice the regularly at home too.

For this coming week:

Memory Work: Psalm 42:1

Spelling Words: has, into, him, look, time

Have a wonderful weekend everyone KK, EVG

Grade 2

This week in Bible classes, we learned the importance of being ready for Christ’s return. The students heard the parable of the ten maidens and were able to understand the significance of what Christ was teaching.  In Social Studies, both classes are busy studying the impact that climate has on the ways people live. Grade 2A is beginning to look at the ‘hot’ country of Zimbabwe, while Grade 2B is looking at the ‘cold’ territory of Nunavut.  Please check that your child’s mittens are labeled with their name. Kids are notorious for not recognizing their own pair when we’ve got unclaimed mittens in the classroom. 😊

That’s all for this week! Enjoy your weekend! BV/RG

Grade 3

We have turned to Church Life in Church History in Grade 3. Our first story was about the Communion of Saints. Ask your child about it. Working with magnets has been a lot of fun this past week in Science. We are nearing the end of Stone Fox. The children are so excited about this novel. Sledding down Mt. Calvin was a lot of fun in phys.ed class. Next week, we hope to turn to locomotor skills activities. The children have created a cool, textured ‘wild thing’ from the story “Where the Wild Things Are” in art. Thank you so much for practising math facts and spelling words with your child. We truly appreciate it and it is of great benefit to your child. Wishing you a restful weekend and a blessed Sunday.

Memory work: Ps. 64:1   Text: Ps. 32:1,2 (two weeks)

Grade 6

We enjoyed another busy and productive week. The students are writing journal entries as if they are Julilly the main character in the novel. We are continuing to practice our volleyball skills. In art we are practicing the skill of 1 point perspective by drawing various items for the bedroom we plan to design. Have a blessed weekend. TB/CVA

Grade 7

The main focus of the upcoming weeks will be the completion of the Science Fair projects. Students have been given in class time to complete paragraphs, reports, graphs and tables. The tri-fold boards will arrive soon for displaying. Please ask your child how their project is progressing. After viewing the movie version of Martin Luther’s life, we transition back to Bible History for King Solomon and the Kingdom of Peace. In Geography we’ll listen to a “RealTalk” interview with Dr. Beisner about climate change. We’ve moved on to Unit 2 in Science, “Thermal Energy and Heat Technology” with our first chapter, “Warming and Cooling”; look for lots of experiments and activities. Enjoy your weekend.

Grade 8

We are currently finishing off our ceiling tile final project for our Tom Sawyer novel study. In Bible, we are working through the Parables of Jesus as we delve into the Middle of Christ’s Ministry. In math we are finishing chapter 5 on proportions and in geography, we have an upcoming chapter 4 test on Tuesday. Science fair projects should be well on their way. We have had a total of 3+ hours of work time provided at school already over the past two weeks. Please check in with your child to see how things are going.

On Monday, Mr. VanAndel from Guido hopes to pay a visit to our grade 8s and talk about grade 9. We look forward to meeting him as this is just one more step towards a successful finish to our grade 8 year. Have a great weekend, RT, AL and MJ
