General News

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,… You are serving the Lord Christ.  Colossians 3:23, 24b

This week we basked in a little more normal week, with the Beauty and Beast production in the rear-view mirror.  We were thankful that we could have such a wonderful experience with this drama production.  It was enjoyed by the community.  We could reflect at the beginning of these productions that God breathes His Spirit on us with different gifts.  It is a blessing that we could see such a wonderful display of talent.  We give thanks for all who were involved in this production.  Your dedication and time has been a blessing to the school and community.

Speaking of getting the community together. On Friday we will be opening our doors for Open House.  You will receive a schedule for the classrooms on Monday of next week.  The doors of the school open to the public at 8:00.   We have recess from 10:00 – 10:30.  At 11:30 we close the doors of our classrooms to the public.   We do invite all grandparents to a delicious lunch in the gymnasium put on by the Ladies Auxiliary at 11:30.  If you feel that you need to work off the delicious lunch you can join us for Hike for Hospice. Let’s make JCCS abuzz with activity as we celebrate the gifts that we have here at our school.

That afternoon we will enjoy our Hike for Hospice.  Students will have been collecting pledges for this for the last number of weeks. Please see the further in this Chronicle for more detail.  We pray for favourable weather for the walk.

Tomorrow staff will be at the school without students.  We are embarking on a number of different PD projects as we seek to wrap up this school year and begin planning for next year. PD helps focus us on the work that we do here with reformed, covenantal education and how we do it with focus.  May God bless the work that we do together.

I believe that this is it for this week.  May God richly bless you this weekend.

Hike for Hospice note:

The Hike for Hospice is happening next Friday!! There’s one more week to continue raising money for McNally House!  We would love to have lots of parents and grandparents come along on this hike. Younger children may come in strollers, but unfortunately dogs will have to stay home. Please wear your JCS t-shirt, or a Hike for Hospice t-shirt if you’ve got one.

The collected money and pledge forms (include your t-shirt size) must be brought to school the week AFTER the hike, not on the day of the hike.

Classroom News

Kindergarten

The kindergarten class was hit with whatever virus is going around right now. Many students have been home sick this week so the long weekend couldn’t come at a better time. The students are starting to demonstrate a firm grasp on the concept of subtraction. If you would like, please try to do simple subtraction questions with your child. We also have been reading our first book called “Ox and Man”. The students are quite confident in their reading skills but many need a refresher on the difference between the b/d sounds.  We continue to learn all about the different animals that the Lord God has made. The students continually stand in awe of their Creator and are constantly asking questions about how or why animals are made a certain way. Enjoy your long weekend everyone. JB/SV

Grade 1

April just flew by! Grade 1 is keeping busy. Both grade 1’s are starting their new unit in Bible on Daniel. In math, we finished fractions, which can be a tricker unit for some students. Encourage your children to try to find fractions in everyday things! We are starting our new unit on adding and subtracting larger numbers. As we anticipate next Friday being a whirlwind of a day with an open house and the McNally walk, please remember to try to raise donations. If students need a new fundraiser pamphlet, please contact your classroom teacher.

Grade 2

Another week has come to an end! We can’t believe next week is May already! In Bible this week we’ve been reading through Acts and learning about Paul and his first missionary journey. We had a fun dress up day on Wednesday! The students came in wearing lots of different colourful patterns, two different shoes, and lots of fun hair-dos as well! On Wednesday afternoon the students also went home with a paper about our field trip to Ripley’s Aquarium! If you’re interested in being a parent volunteer, please return the bottom of the paper with your information by May 5. Have a great long weekend and we hope to see many of you at the Open House next week! RG & BV

Grade 3

We are traveling ‘with’ the Israelites through the wilderness to the promised land in Bible History. The novel “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” has come to an end. Oh, the kids (and their teachers) loved the funny antics of those penguins. We are now working full tilt on our penguin project. We could play some fun cooperative games in phys.ed class. Barbara Reid art continues on. In Math we are looking to finish up our multiplication unit with a test. If all goes well, we will take some time learning more about clock reading after that. Continue to collect money for McNally House. Looking forward to seeing many at the Open House. Have a wonderful, long weekend and a blessed Sunday.

Grade 6

After all the busyness of the play practices and rehearsals, it was wonderful to see it all come together over the weekend! Congratulations to the performers, producers, directors, sound crews, and all those involved with a fantastic production. We continue to roll through the final stretch of the year in Grade 6. We have started our new novel study “Lost in the Barrens” in Language Arts. In Science, we continue learning about the amazing building blocks of creation in matter and how everything we see around us is made up of tiny atoms of elements. We can truly see how creation declares God’s glory! Next week, JCCS is looking forward to and planning for the Open House on Friday. Schedules for each grade will be somewhere in this Chronicle. We hope to see all of you there! Have an excellent long weekend!

Grade 7

In Math we transitioned from coding to or new unit on financial literacy. We’ll use the material offered by Ramsey Solutions, “Foundations in Personal Finance”, starting with saving and budgeting. We’ve learned about God’s covenantal love as He stays true to the promises He made to David despite the failures of Solomon. Our study of the Reformation continues as we move to France and the Huguenots with a focus on Jean Cauvin. After an experiment with the evaporation rates of two pure substances we’ll look next at energy transfer systems in Science. Students have expressed an interest as to which track and field event they would like to compete in. Over the next few weeks we will practice those events. Enjoy your weekend.

Grade 8 As we conclude a short week, we find ourselves on the cusp of May. Lately everything seems to be picking up steam and the momentum is getting faster by the day. On that note, grade 8 has turned its attention to the construction of the CPR. This week we studied the unique challenges that northern Ontario, the prairies, as well as the Rocky Mountains, presented during the construction process. In Geography this week we welcomed Mr. and Mrs. Feenstra to present to us on their recent mission trip to Mexico and Pan de Vida. This orphanage has a unique connection to JCCS as Mr. Jongsma’s brother works there as well as a former JCCS student, Mr. Davin Post. Today we welcomed Mr. Nick Tenhage to present his work as a Graphic Designer and Art Director at Compass Creative. He also took some time to help us work on our Grad Trip Logos! Have a blessed weekend! Cheers, Mr. J, Mrs. Tesfaye, Mrs. Ludwig
