General News

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,… You are serving the Lord Christ.  Colossians 3:23, 24b

This will be the last Chronicle for January already.   With the snow of the past week, we can still see that we are mid-winter and that there are some nice snowy days to enjoy, yet!

With the snowy weather, we did use our new text message system to notify you about early dismissal.  Hopefully, you all received the message.  The hope with this system is that we have a quick and efficient way to communicate this with the homes. If you did not receive the text let us know.

On Monday and Tuesday, staff will be busy learning about personalities, working on the science curriculum, and building those beautiful report cards you have come to expect.   Reports will be going home on February 3rd.

On Wednesday we will have Soup Day.   Remember to lug a mug and bring a spoon for this delicious escape from the regular lunch!  We thank the Ladies Auxiliary for arranging for this day.

We have been working heartily to get the report cards out to you.  These reports are very valuable in that they give an insight into how the year of learning is going.  It is also a springboard for conversations and goals as we seek to develop our talents and abilities in service in His Kingdom.  Please use these reports on Friday in order to take joy in the work that is done but also to encourage each other to glorify God through all of our learning.

I believe that is all for this week.  May God continue to bless and strengthen us in the upcoming week. JVI

Kindergarten

The week started with Mrs. Deboersap teaching KA. The students thoroughly enjoyed having her as their teacher and loved singing a new song in a different language. Thanks so much Mrs. Deboersap for coming and teaching for the day. Wednesday also proved to be an exciting day with GREEN DAY and a snow day in the middle of the day! On Thursday and Friday the kindergarten students were able to enjoy sledding for the very first time on Mount Calvin! They were so excited and absolutely loved it! Next week will be a little bit of a different week with Monday/Tuesday as both days are PD days. Enjoy your extra long weekend everyone. JB/SV

Here is a look at next week’s schedule:

Wednesday: Library Day/Soup Day – please send a mug and a spoon along for your child to enjoy a cup of soup in the gym!

We encourage you to continue reading books at home with your children as they get more familiar with certain sight words and long vowels. In math, we are well into learning about our ones, tens, and hundreds! A reminder that Monday and Tuesday are P.D days, and Wednesday is soup day. Remember to bring a mug or bowl!

Grade 2

We had a nice surprise of going home early at lunch on Wednesday because of the snow! We’re thankful that the buses could get out safely and we hope that everyone had a nice and cozy afternoon! This week in Bible, we heard the stories about Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. In Language Arts we have started a new unit called “The Job Hunt”. The students have enjoyed reading the stories so far and we’ve had lots of conversations about the subway and New York City where the story takes place. Next Wednesday we look forward to soup day! Please bring a mug and a spoon. Have a great weekend and a blessed Sunday! RG/BV

Grade 3

The children continue to be busy with work in class. We had fun working with magnets and how each pole works; and now we turn to electricity which will also be hands-on learning. In Church History, Mr. Ryan Mans came to class to talk about being an elder in the church. Thank you brother, for speaking about this beautiful task you have been given. In gym class, we are moving in many different ways and with lots of energy. The ending to the story about Stone Fox was something different than we expected. The children loved the story line. We have now turned to our CKLA program again, reading about Alice in Wonderland. We added a lot of texture to our giant pencil in Art class. Great job, boys and girls. Wishing you a restful, long weekend. Hopefully the coughs and cold will take a rest as well ;).

Memory work: Ps. 95:1   Text: Ps. 32:1,2

Grade 4

What a beautiful week we had with another snow fall! We are thankful that we could have *mostly* full classrooms for another week of learning. Next week is a short week, but we will still be busy covering information. Keep an eye on your child’s agenda for a special note. Both classes are learning a lot about the Kings of Israel – ask them some questions about different kings!

Thursday: Science Test (Rocks & Minerals) – Grade 4A  (Students will have a review in their notes for this test).

Friday: Text – Isaiah 40:30-31; Psalm 132:1,10; No Spelling Test. Both classes will have a math test on Chapter 5 – Multiplication and Division Strategies. Grade 4A’s French quiz on numbers 50-79 (scheduled for last week Friday) has been moved to this date. On this quiz, students will be expected to be able to recognize numbers written in French, and match them with the correct numerical value.

Grade 5

Another busy week has passed!. In Grade 5A we are wrapping up the science unit about Nutrition, and in Grade 5B the Cells unit is being finished. We are looking forward to starting the novel study “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”! This is always an exciting time in our grade! After two PD days, we are looking forward to a soup lunch on Wednesday, so don’t forget your bowl or mug and spoon! Devotions for 5A – Micahel (W), Ryan (Th), Sawyer (F), and for 5B – Leena (W), Thomas (Th), Geneva (F). Enjoy the weekend and the following PD days! RK/KVL

The students enjoyed a longer morning recess on Wednesday to have their turn on Mt. Calvin. What a blast that was!  6A will be handing over the recycling reins to 6B starting next week. Each student has been assigned a disease to research during class time. Enjoy your extended break. TB/CVA

Grade 7

Next week we will learn more about the reign of King David now that his rule is firmly established and the LORD’s promise to him has come true. Geometry in Math is a nice change as we work our way through plane geometry. We are almost done our, “author profiles” and some of us are even going to try to contact our author and ask high order thinking questions; be sure to ask your child if they are able to contact their author. We will begin basketball in P.E., beginning with dribbling. Enjoy your weekend.

Grade 8

As we close out the last full week of January (already!), grade 8 was able to close out and begin various different things this week. Students were able to finish their ceiling tile projects, they look great and be sure to check them out as they will soon adorn the ceiling of the 8B classroom! In geography students began Ch. 5 ‘Quality of Life’ and observed how various other children live from around the world and compare it to their own life here in Niagara. In History the dominion of Canada welcomed British Columbia to its ranks while the prairie territories saw the rise of Louis Riel. Finally in L.A. we began a new unit in poetry and look to begin our own poem writing next week. Outside of the classroom Basketball tryouts were able begin and teams will be posted asap. Have a blessed weekend! Cheers, Mrs. Ludwig, Mrs. Tesfaye, and Mr. J
