“Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.” Job 28:28

It is with pleasure that I write this first Chronicle of the 2024 – 2025 school year.  We rejoice in being able to start up another school year under his blessing.  We could do this together as a community at the opening assembly.  Here we explored wisdom and what that is.   Job asks this question in Job 28.  We reflected that wisdom cannot be found anywhere on earth but only in knowing God and serving him.  What a blessing that we can do this here at JCCS and can do this in a way that is reflected in all of our coursework and interactions that we have as brothers and sisters in Christ!   We look to explore this theme throughout this 60-year celebration of God’s faithfulness for JCCS.

In a short time, we are in the full swing of things.   This means that the extracurricular activities are starting as well.  Several students have been practicing hard for the West Lincoln Fair Spelling Bee.  They will be competing at 6:00 at the fair if you are interested in watching. The soccer practices and cross country practices have started in preparation for the soccer tournament on September 28th and Cross Country Runs on October 10th (Golden Horseshoe) and 11th (Dundas Valley).   These are excellent opportunities to develop other skills!

On Wednesday morning we hope to run bus safety drills.  These drills will be for all students – even the ones that are not on the busses regularly.  We do the drills for all students because all of our students use the busses for field trips and should be familiar with safety routines.

The chocolate bar campaign is underway!   There are some different options this year which I am sure you will hear about from the students.   Students will have the opportunity to hone their sales skills while raising funds for our school trips.

Finally, I’ll leave you with a reminder to get all of the forms in.   We hope to have an order in for the gym shirts and gym shorts soon and will need the forms returned to do this.  The gym shirts will sport the new JCCS logo.  We hope to have a retirement schedule of several years for the other gym shirts. You can use either shirt for Phys. Ed.   We will require that all students in 5 – 8 wear the new gym shorts that are ordered through the school. These are new and are from Lands End,  must be ordered as these will be the only accepted shorts.  We will have extras of every size available for exchange should the size you ordered not be suitable.

I believe that is all for this week.   May God richly bless us in the upcoming week!

Classroom News

Kindergarten

Our first week at school is done! The students did so well on their first days. We spent most of our time learning the schedules and routines of our classroom as well as a couple special crafts. In Bible, we started the Creation Story and learned about what God created on days 1-5. Next week, we will begin our Math and Language Arts units. A reminder to send in any paperwork that may still be needed.

Grade 1

Week 1 in grade 1 was a week of learning new things. The students learned how to sit at a desk, raise their hand, look at the teacher, take time to listen to the teacher, sing our memory work and so much more. Daily routines are so important for children to thrive. We could stand in awe of God’s beautiful creation in Bible class. The children enjoyed listening to Jamie Soles’ song “In the beginning..”. Learning about safety on the playground was enjoyed by all. Next week we hope to talk about bus safety.

Grade 2

The first week of school went by so quickly! We have settled in nicely and have been learning the new routines in our grade 2 classrooms. This week, we started with our first Bible stories. We are starting in the New Testament with the Birth of John the Baptist and Jesus Christ. In Science we started our first unit on Liquids and Solids!  Please bring in over the ear headphones if you haven’t already done so. Have a great weekend and blessed Sunday! MB & BV

Grade 3

Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding. Job 28:28

This year marks the 60th anniversary of our beloved school.  60 years of God’s faithfulness. May the Lord continue to bless our work and that we may actively fear Him in our words, deeds, and thoughts. We had a busy first week in grade three.  Lots of stories were shared and questions asked. The students are catching on to the routines of this new year.  Just a reminder, to bring back all the school forms (youngest) and to bring headphones. In our Bible classes we started at the beginning…Genesis.  We thank the Lord for creating this beautiful world and may we learn to praise and glorify Him every day. That’s it for now.

Grade 4

It’s been a busy but great first week here in Grade 4 as we adjust to new students and teachers, new routines and new expectations. Grade 4 is also responsible for supervising the playground equipment in the outdoor shed, and we learned all about this special duty. We are also responsible for organizing the Thanksgiving Food Drive and both classes created posters this week that will soon be hung around the school. It’s been extra busy for those students involved in the spelling bee team, as they practice and prepare for the competition at the West Niagara Fair on Friday evening. Best of luck to the team and special mention to our Grade 4 representative, Macy Heemskerk!  Just a reminder that with the warm weather, students should have a water bottle, especially on the days they have PE. We will include reminders of the PE schedule every week here in the Chronicle. 4B will start their devotions schedule on Sept. 16. Students are asked to pick a Bible passage to read to the class and lead us in the Lord’s Prayer. 4B spelling words will be listed in your child’s agenda each week. Most students have delivered 1 or 2 kleenex boxes and have secured any outstanding school supplies, thank you! Have a wonderful weekend.

Grade 5

The first week has already come and gone! We are once again getting used to the routines and procedures of life in the classroom, and we enjoyed our first week together. In Bible class, we are starting with the time between the OT and NT, and we will work our way through the gospels from there. This fits nicely with our unit about Ancient Rome in social studies, since the Romans were in power when Jesus was on Earth. For PE class, please ensure that your child has appropriate footwear for running and playing sports. Next week, students will be leading lunch devotions. They have written the first prayer together in class, so they are familiar with what is expected of them. If needed, they should practice reading their chosen Bible passage at home.

Devotions for the week are as follows:

5A – Kolten (M), Mila (Tu), Hailey (W), Adelaide (Th), Victoria (F).

5B – Helayna (M), Peri (Tu), Kenzie (W), Jasmine (Th), Emmett (F).

Have a wonderful weekend! RK/KV

Grade 6A

How blessed we were to start another school year together. Our week has gone by quickly. It may seem that we didn’t accomplish much, but I’m sure that the students will attest to the fact that we did in fact  do many different things. We have made a start to our various units. We look forward to using the talents and gifts that the LORD has given us to complete our work to His glory and honour. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any cares or concerns or leave a comment in the agenda. Next week, D.V., we hope to spend an afternoon at the Oosterhoff farm as an introduction to our Science unit. The students already know what they need to bring. Have a blessed weekend. MJ/CVA

Grade 6B

And just like that, week one is already under our belts!  Both students and teachers have settled in quite nicely in 6B.  We are looking forward to our first field trip next week, already.,  We are planning a trip  to the bush at my (Mrs. Oosterhoff’s) place.  We spend the afternoon wandering through God’s beautiful creation and then cooling off with a dip in the pond before we head back to the school.  Please make sure to send along bug spray, older shoes or boots that can get muddy, a swimsuit and towel along with your child on Thursday.

Devotions: M. Meghan, Tu. Robby, W. Liam G., Fr. Allison (please ask your child to see their devotion sheet)

Have a restful weekend and a blessed Sunday. SO EVG

Grade 7A

By God’s grace we were able to begin another year of learning in Gr. 7A. The students seem to have made a smooth transition to the new teacher, routines and expectations. We’ve started our Science study with, “Pure Substances and Mixtures” as we look at heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures. In Geography we are learning about the characteristics of rivers and oceans, and how the Lord has blessed us here in the Niagara Peninsula with an abundance of fresh, running water. Next week in Math we’ll learn about scientific notation and order of operations. Israel is so very in need of God’s grace at the end of Judges, and we see how the Lord responds to this need through Samuel in Bible History. Enjoy your weekend.

Grade 7B

It has been a wonderful first week in Grade 7B. We settled nicely into school routines and became comfortable with each other. In French class, we spent this week reviewing what was learned in the past; next week we will begin learning about French greetings. If your child greets you in French in the morning or after school, I’ll take the blame for that;). The students enjoyed beginning our unit about Short Stories in Language Arts. We spent time cozily reading the stories together in the class followed by discussion and questions. Next week, we will continue reading different short stories together. It was a great start to the school year, and I’m excited to continue to get to know the Grade 7 class!

Grade 8

The first week of the 2024-2025 school year has flown by. In Bible History, we have begun our first unit on the Intertestamentary period, looking into the 400 years of silence in between the Old and New Testament. In LA, we have started into our short story unit and have also listened to a number of examples for our first writing assignment, which will be personal, descriptive essays. Reminders for next week – we have a Science quiz on Monday labelling the parts of a microscope and a vocabulary quiz on Thursday on Wordly Wise Word List 1. Also, soccer tryouts and chocolate bar sales have started up. Looking forward to a great year. TB/RT
