“Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.” Job 28:28

We are heading into the Thanksgiving weekend and are just beginning to notice the changing colours. It has been a spectacular six weeks of school, during which we have experienced many blessings as we focused on our studies. Thanksgiving always marks the completion of the first chunk of the school year.

While this is being published, the Cross Country teams for grades seven and eight will have completed their run at Dundas Valley Conservation Area. It was great to see a high level of participation from students across grades 5 to 8 in the cross-country runs. They challenged each other and achieved higher levels of fitness.

The drama production is underway, and we have many volunteers helping us with the production of Annie. This is another opportunity for us to develop different talents.

On Thursday, October 17th, the ACE (Assisting Children with Exceptionalities) committee will be hosting an Embrace with ACE evening. We will have a panel discussion on caregiver fatigue. This event will take place at Rehoboth Canadian Reformed Church in Burlington. The livestream link will be available on the church’s website.

We look forward to Fallfest next Saturday. This is a wonderful community event and another opportunity for us to gather together. We thank all of the people who have worked hard behind the scenes to make this happen.

On Saturday, Mrs. Tesfaye will also be celebrating her birthday. Be sure to wish her a happy birthday if you see her, which I’m sure you will!

I believe that is all. I wish you a blessed Thanksgiving weekend!

Classroom News

Kindergarten

We had a fun week exploring the Moose! Thank you to all our friends for bringing in their stuffies and books to share with us, we even got to see a real moose antler. For Science, we are almost done learning about our 5 senses and got to have a closer look at how we use our sight! Both classes were able to have some special time with Miss Bee’s class this week, doing buddy reading as well as singing songs about bears and moose! The students enjoyed our hot dog day, thanks to the Ladies Auxiliary for coordinating this for us. We hope you enjoy the children’s craft coming home today, showing everything we are thankful for. The students (and teachers) are looking forward to an extra long weekend. Happy Thanksgiving

Grade 1

The grade 1 classes had a fantastic time learning about an iconic animal of Ontario. Grade 1A studied the black bear, and 1B learned about moose. Many activities were completed, and the students enjoyed their walk around the school today to admire and learn about what other grades had studied. In our Bible classes this week, we learned about how God is faithful to His promises and how He wants us to rely on Him. We could see this clearly in the life of Jacob. In math class, we practiced counting by twos and fives. These can be tricky concepts to master. Ask your child to count for you! Our yellow ring of tricky words is growing; please encourage your child to practice these words daily. It will free up ‘brain space’ when reading sentences. Have a blessed long weekend. It sounds like there are great adventures planned!

Grade 2

This week in Grade 2, we continued with Bible stories about Jesus and His ministry. Our new unit continues to focus on Jesus’ ministry and the parables He told. We have learned that parables are earthly stories with heavenly meanings. We enjoyed learning about wolves and beavers this week and enjoyed walking around the school to see all the theme week projects! We plan to wrap up our Science unit on liquids and solids next week. We hope everyone has an enjoyable Thanksgiving long weekend! MB & BV

Grade 3

We had a great week learning about some of Ontario’s Big 4 animals, specifically the bear in Grade 3A and the moose in Grade 3B. We wrapped up our church history unit on John Eliot. That brings us to thanksgiving weekend. Both classes will be starting a new language unit and a new Bible unit. We continue to learn about the pioneers in social studies and soccer skills in Phys. Ed. Wishing all of you a wonderful weekend.

Memory work: Psalm 8: 4, 5; Genesis 12:1-3 (two weeks)

Grade 4

As we look forward to a long Thanksgiving weekend, we wish you and your families a good time of rest and relaxation as we reflect on the many blessings poured out upon us by our heavenly Father!

Grade 4B had their church history quiz and Bible test returned – overall, a good effort from the students! Parents, please sign and return. The geometry quiz will be returned next week.

Grade 5

Students have been learning a little about the habitats of Ontario’s bears in 5A, and moose in 5B. They’ve created some impressive displays and we are excited to see what the rest of the school has created. Theme week and the cross country meet just before a long Thanksgiving weekend meant that there were some breaks from the regularly scheduled curriculum. Next week, things should be back to normal! We will start with Unit 2 in Bible, learning about Jesus’ first miracle and teachings. Devotions for the week are as follows: 5A – Adelaide(W), Victoria (Th), Ethan (F). 5B –  Emmett (W), Claire (Th), Trenton (F). wishing you all a happy Thanksgiving and an enjoyable long weekend! Grade 6A

One of the highlights this week was our first ever trip to Latitude Air Ambulance. The students had opportunities to go on several of the planes that are used for their medevac trips. Mr. Togeretz shared his experiences with us and was willing to answer the students’ questions. While one group was getting a tour the others were making several flight related objects organized by Mrs. Oosterhoff which we greatly appreciated. Thanks to Mrs. Stieva for driving and for all the volunteers that joined us for this trip. Thanks also to the ladies for saving the hotdogs for us which were thoroughly enjoyed upon our return. On Thursday, 23 of the grade 6 students could participate in the cross country run. We hope that you have an enjoyable long weekend.

Grade 6B

Wow! What a fun and busy week we’ve had.  Our trip to Latitude was so interesting. Thanks so much to Mr. Togeretz for talking to us about the important work Latitude does and for letting us sit in the cockpit of one of their planes. Thursday was a very different day as well. Well over half of the class went to the cross country run and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Thankfully they remained at school long enough to help make and eat the first batch of beaver tails. Those of us that stayed behind spent our day making mini beaver tails for the staff and most importantly working on our display for “Where do Beavers Live”.  Friday saw us touring the school to check out all the Big Four class displays. Phew! We are all ready for this long weekend.  Have a safe and enjoyable one and a blessed Sunday.

Grade 7A

We are very thankful that the LORD has allowed us to reach this point in the academic year. Thanksgiving is sometimes an uncomfortable weekend for students as they meet with family and get asked the inevitable question, “How is school going?”. Be sure to have this discussion with your child and to relay any pertinent details to their teacher. Next week Wednesday we will be peppering Smithville proper with flyers as we spread the news of FallFest; more details to follow. Although we’ll “miss” the multi-stage fitness test on Tuesday, we’ll be introduced to flag football on Thursday. Be sure to ask your child how their attempts to control water temperature went in Science. Enjoy your long weekend.

Grade 7B

Grade 7B had a busy week, wrapping things up before the long weekend! The students are almost finished with their math unit on fractions and decimals, there will be a test sometime next week. The students enjoyed theme week, applying what they’ve learned about the elements of art to a small project about moose. Next Wednesday, we will be handing out flyers for Fall Fest to the town of Smithville, and the students took some time this week to plan out their routes and how many flyers they will need. Wishing everyone a lovely long weekend!

Grade 8

It has been another busy week in Grade 8, with a number of quizzes, assignments, and speeches. In Math, we completed the first half of our integer chapter and will be moving into some more complex integers in the second half. In LA, we started our novel study, “Tom Sawyer”, and look forward to working through this classic novel. In History/Geography, we will be switching back as Chapter 1 comes to a close for both classes. We hope you enjoy the Thanksgiving long weekend as you celebrate God’s blessings with friends and family! See you Wednesday! TB/RT
