General News

“Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.” Job 28:28

We had a busy week with all the Science Fair activities. By all accounts, there was a lot of community engagement, as the open house was a packed event. Congratulations to our students who put so much effort into their projects. We would like to recognize the following students for their placements in the competition: Honourable mention goes to Nolan and Ben; third place to Victoria and Dayna; second place to Audrey and Augie; and first place to Zion and Addison. We also want to thank all the judges for their hard work and dedication in volunteering to make this event a success.

As we move forward, some new extracurricular activities are starting up. The Chess Club will begin their games next week, and the Basketball teams are preparing for the upcoming Basketball Tournament on March 21. You may notice that some of your children are coming home with earworms. This is not a bad thing—an earworm is a term used to describe a song stuck in your head. We all experience this, and while it can be both good and bad, it’s often part of the process as we get ready for the School Concert. The students will be learning the songs over the next few weeks.

On Monday, the Grade 8 class will head off to Guido for the Grade 8 Day experience. This will give them an opportunity to gradually adjust to the upcoming transition as they move from their nine years at JCCS to the next step in their educational journey.

On Thursday, we will celebrate Flag Day with a dress-up event. Students are encouraged to wear red and white, a Canadian Tuxedo (you can Google it if you’re curious), or dress as an iconic Canadian animal (such as a beaver, moose, Canada goose, etc.).

Grade one will have a little bit of a different celebration on Thursday.  In an “age-old” tradition they will celebrate 100 Day.  We’re looking forward to a grand “old” time.

On Friday, staff will either head to Grace Christian School for EA Day, to ACRES for the CARE curriculum day, or stay here at JCCS for PowerSchool implementation. We hope to continue improving the way we do things as we seek to serve Him. May God bless this professional development.

I believe that’s all for the week. May God strengthen and bless us in the coming week

Classroom News

Kindergarten

It was another busy week in kindergarten, we hope you all enjoyed your first ice/snow day on Thursday.  Today we celebrated Mrs. Visser’s birthday in the classroom and enjoyed some tasty treats from her, KA will celebrate on Monday. Report cards will be going home today for both classes, please sign and return the envelopes.  We are looking forward to meeting with you all next week.  Wednesday we will be doing our Valentine’s exchange; your child can dress up in valentine’s colours if they like.  Thursday is flag/heritage dress up day at school, we are excited to see what you all come up with.  A few reminders: please return your child’s library books every Wednesday and mission money is collected every Thursday (KA) and on Friday (KB).  Have a great weekend! DV/MV

Grade 1

How fun it was for the students and teachers to enjoy a day at home on Thursday. Grade 1’s 100-day celebrations will now be celebrated on Thursday, February 13th instead. We’ve had a busy week in Grade 1. In Science, we continued to learn about seasonal changes, and have focused on the season of spring. We also enjoyed completing a tree of all seasons for our art class. They’re hanging in the hallway, so check them out next time you’re in the school. In Bible class, we heard about Samson’s death and learned about Ruth. In math we have continued to measure things around the classroom in different units of measurement. Two new tricky words were added to the ring of words this week. Please keep practising these with your child for just a few minutes each day. Have a blessed weekend!

Grade 2

We were very excited to have a snow day this week! Grade 2 is finishing up our Bible unit and ending with the story of Jesus’ ascension into heaven. We will be switching to Church History next, learning about John Chrysostom and his work as a preacher in the city of Antioch. Next week, we are looking forward to a shorter week with a P.D. day on Friday. The students are very excited for Valentine’s Day on Thursday. Just a little reminder: if your child plans to hand out Valentines, please make sure there is one for every student in the class. Have a great weekend and a blessed Sunday.   MB & BV

Grade 3

Did you know…? Division is backwards multiplication. Land type determines land use so every community is unique. While Joseph’s brothers had a plan for evil, God used it for good: to save a nation. These are just some of the things that we learned in grade 3 over the past week! As we look ahead to next week, we remind you to check the agendas for spelling words (no words for 3B this week).

Memory Work: Hymn 2:1; Deuteronomy 18: 18

Grade 4

Hope everyone enjoyed the unexpected day off on Thursday due to the wintry weather! We had a wonderful time starting to prepare for Medieval Day. Assigning roles, starting our coat of arms art project, and learning all about knights, castles, and squires. Thank you for your response to the poll sent out earlier this week – we have decided to have Medieval Day on March 21st. We have a short week coming up! On Wednesday, 4B has a vocab quiz on Chapter 1-4 words (glued into their agendas). On Wednesday, 4A will have a Bible test on the life of Solomon. On Thursday, we will be celebrating both Valentine’s and Flag Day with several dress-up options. Spelling words: brothers, ponies, star, cherries, colours, steps, wishes, houses, people, tanks, bushes, buttons, roses, mothers

4A Devos: Elias (M), Macy (T), Jasper (W), Gabriel K (Th)

4B Devos: Quinn (M), Jackson (T), Veda (W), Edwin (Th)

Grade 5

We hope you all enjoyed your snow day yesterday! We look forward to going skating again on Wednesday! If you’re able, we would love to have some help tying skates. Students who are playing hockey must wear helmets, and other students are encouraged to as well. In class, we are continuing with working our way through Ancient Egypt, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Jesus’ ministry, and more. The students will be participating in the in-class Geography Challenge, hopefully on Monday afternoon, so that we can determine who the top 2 from each class are. They will move on to the school finals in the gym on February 20. We look forward to meeting with you at Parent-Teacher Conferences next week.
Devotions are as follows:
5A – Ethan (M), Blake (Tu), Oliver (W), Taurie (Th)
5B – Lia (M), Kingston (Tu), Ezra (W), Macrae (Th)
Have a wonderful weekend! RK/KV

Grade 6A

This week the term 1 reports have gone home. Please take the time to review them with your children. In class students were also given an opportunity to reflect on their own strengths and weaknesses. We look forward to the opportunity to meet with the parents again to discuss their first term in grade 6. In class this week the students have enjoyed the transition into the geometry unit. In language arts they have completed their first journal entry to go along with the novel and the life of Julilly, the slave. We are finishing off the French unit and will have a quiz next Thursday. Students can also expect a Science quiz next Wednesday. The students are reminded to use their study sheets to help prepare for the quiz. Have a blessed weekend, CVA MJ

Grade 6B

We had a good week together here in 6B.  The students used their knowledge of mathematical shapes to build bridges, being tested for strength.  Our church history units covered the crusades while in social studies we explored northern waters and lands with the Vikings. The big question was answered:  Did the viking helmets have horns or not?   It was fun to spend the whole week with the students so that Mrs. Oosterhoff could be on grandma duty.  We hope to welcome her back next Wednesday.  As teachers we are looking forward to meeting with many of you next week.

Tuesday:  Math test

Grade 7A

The main event this past week was the Science Fair; the fruition of months of scientific research, collaboration and planning. It was another opportunity here at JCCS for students to display their God given talents. We are all blessed with varying abilities and strengths as evidenced by the term one reports. Next week we’ll move on to musicals, basketball teams, geography challenges and chess. We’ll also carry on with Handel, King David, poetry, integers and global climate factors. Enjoy your weekend.

Grade 7B

With the science fair projects all wrapped up, grade 7 will be heading back into a more ‘normal’ routine next week. We will be beginning a new unit in history about the 13 American colonies and the United Empire Loyalists. In math, we will be reviewing geometry with a test happening towards the end of the week. We are looking forward to watching many of the grade 7 students perform in the play at school on Thursday! Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend!

Grade 8

With the close of this week, all the hard work that has gone into the Science Fair comes to a close. Thank you to the hard work that the students put into their projects, and also thank you to all the parents, grandparents, friends, siblings, etc. that helped them along the way. A big thank you also to the many volunteer judges that came out for the interview or judging the displays.

Next week will be another busy week, although it will also be a shorter one.

Monday – Grade 9 day – we will leave first thing in the morning. We will be at Guido until 12:30 and we will be closing out the day with a hike. Please dress accordingly.

Wednesday – Guido Ice Hockey Tournament

Thursday – Full day “Annie Jr.” practice.

Friday – PD Day!

It will be a busy but exciting week! Enjoy your weekend! TB/RT
