“Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.” Job 28:28

Another week of school has flown by, making March Break seem like a distant memory. While breaks are always welcome, it’s also rewarding to immerse ourselves in our studies, serving Him through the pursuit of knowledge. This past week was particularly busy, filled with extra basketball practices leading up to today’s tournament, and a Medieval Feast held in the gym as I write this edition of the Chronicle.

The Board, Education Committee, and staff had a productive evening discussing the School Review Committee’s recommendations and the school’s future. This fast-paced session allowed us to brainstorm and gain a broader perspective as we work towards developing a plan and structure for the years ahead. May God continue to bless our school.

Looking ahead to this week, we’re excited to host an Early Years Morning on Tuesday at 9:30 AM and look forward to seeing many of you there. We are also currently participating in the West Lincoln Community Care Food Drive. Please contribute non-perishable items to support those in need within our community.

On Friday, representatives from McNally House will give a half-hour presentation about the Hike for Hospice at 1:30 PM in the gym. All are welcome to attend.

We extend our sincere gratitude to our basketball coaches: Mr. Blake VanEgmond and Miss Leanne DeBoer for their dedication to the girls’ team, and Mr. Joosse for his commitment to the boys’ team. The Defenders looked sharp in their new jerseys, for which we thank Mr. Nobel for his assistance in procuring, proudly displaying our JCCS and Defenders logo.

Finally, we bid farewell to our student teachers on Friday: Miss Devries from grade 3, Miss Wilpstra from grade 5, and Miss Otten from grade 8. We hope they enjoyed their time with the JCCS family and wish them continued blessings in their studies.

That concludes this week’s update. May God strengthen and bless us all in the week to come.

Classroom News

Kindergarten

We were thankful for the warmer weather we could enjoy on Wednesday and we were able to enjoy our P.E time outside. We continued learning new letters this week in LA. The children had fun doing their “b” and “l” letter art. Ask them what animals they made! The students began simple subtraction this week and did a great job understanding this concept. We are happy to see everyone has been practicing their easter concert songs, please continue to do so at home. Kindergarten will be having a Teddy Bear Picnic coming up on April 2, more details will come soon. Just a reminder about the Spring Community Care food drive, please send in a non-perishable food item if you are able. We hope you have a great weekend! MV/DV

Grade 1

After a refreshing holiday, it was great to be back in the classroom again. It was such a joy to hear the students share stories about their March Break. A special highlight this week was the children receiving their very own Bibles. It is heartwarming to see them cherish and care for this beautiful treasure. In Bible class, we learned about King Saul’s pursuit of David. However, the LORD had different plans and faithfully protected David and his men. Our language arts lessons were filled with engaging activities, including writing, editing, revising stories, reading about the hares and the frogs, and practicing r-blend words. Skating was a fantastic experience! It was wonderful to see the grade 7 students encouraging their younger brothers and sisters—thank you, grade 7! A big thank you also to the parents who helped tie skates and to Mrs. Nobel for ensuring our safe travels.

Grade 2

This week grade 2 has been finishing off loose ends in the CKLA unit about The Job Hunt. We are looking forward to starting our novel study next week – Nate the Great. In Church history we are finishing off our studies about Martin Luther, and working through the stories learning about Pelagius and Augustine, and their work for or against God’s Word. In Math we are finishing off another chapter in our math books. Please continue to practice math facts at home with your child. Grade 2 has been working hard at memorizing the songs for the upcoming Easter concert, you’ve probably heard them singing or humming them at home as well. Have a great weekend. BV&MB

Grade 3

God is so good! We really enjoyed the beautiful weather and temperatures this past week and praise Him for all He has given us. In Bible, we will hear about the last plagues that Egypt had to endure and how the Lord showed His protection through the Passover. Math will be filled with rulers, scales, and measuring cups, as we tackle a unit on measurement.

See your child’s agenda for the spelling words for the week. Students are encouraged to practice these at home. Grade 3B has just one more week with our student teacher, Miss DeVries. We are thankful for the time we had with her in our classroom and for all that she taught us.

Memory Work: Hymn 37: 1, 2

Grade 4

Coming to you live as Mother Jes. The Medieval Fest is currently happening as I am writing to you. There were knights, ladies in waiting, lords, a king, a queen, craftsmen, bakers, serfs, nuns, a monk and jesters. Thank you so much to all of the parents for the work that they did to make this day such a success. It is definitely the highlight of the year for Grade 4. We have another skating on Wednesday from 12:15-1:15. Parents are welcome to join us at the rink. Please make sure that your child has a helmet. Next week Grade 4A will be having a Bible test on Tuesday. Grade 4A will also be starting a new science unit on light and sound. The spelling words are written in the agendas this week. Grade 4B has a number of quizzes next week: math on Tuesday, vocabulary quiz on Wednesday and Bible test on Thursday. A review for vocab was sent home via email this afternoon. Please review these words! Spelling words are in the agendas. That’s all for now. Fare thee well; I must away!

Grade 5

We hope you all enjoyed your March Break! The students shared about a lot of fun things and it sounds like they enjoyed their time off. We got right back into the swing of things this week and accomplished a lot. We started our last Bible unit and learned about Judas’ betrayal of Jesus and Jesus being captured. Next week we will talk about the awful suffering Jesus endured as He was condemned and crucified, and the victory of the resurrection. Next week, 5A will be finishing up the Ancient Egypt unit in social studies. As a way to wrap up the unit for both classes, we will be mummifying an Egyptian doll on Thursday. We will have to say goodbye to Miss Wilpstra on Friday, as next week is her last week with us. It’s been a pleasure to have her with us for the last few weeks!
Devotions for next week are as follows:
5A –  Mila (M), Hailey (Tu), Adelaide (W), Victoria (Th), Ethan (F)
5B – Ezra (M), Lia (Tu), Macrae (W), Abigail (Th), Rayna (F)
Have a wonderful weekend! RK/KV

Grade 6A

We made a good start back to work after the enjoyable break. The students will start preparing their slides for the disease research project. In Math we tackled improper and mixed fractions this week and were successful. In our novel study, Julilly and 3 other slaves are planning their escape in the novel and we are eager to know how they make out. In Bible history we begun to study the story of Joseph. Before that, however, the students were sent home with a ‘Dinner Table Question’ on Genesis 36. It led to some great conversations! Have a blessed weekend! CVA MJ

Grade 6B

After the break from our studies last week, 6B came to class refreshed and ready to work.  A new church history unit, “Forerunners of the Reformation” was begun with the story of Peter Waldo and how he began to translate and distribute the Bible into the people’s language.  Our explorations continued with James Cook and his travels around the world and along the western shoreline of Canada. Next week Tuesday the exploration unit will wrap-up with a test.  We hope to begin presenting our LA stories to the class.  There are still some students who need to have their work edited by a family member or adult volunteer – please have this done and the paperwork filled out by Monday if possible.  We wish you all a restful weekend.

Grade 7A

We’ve begun a new unit in science, thermal energy and heat technology. So far in chapter seven we’ve learned about temperature and thermometers, and baffled our skin. In math we’ll write and solve inequalities as well as two step equations with integers. After we’ve learned what an oratorio is we’ll appreciate Handel’s masterpiece, “Messiah”. After Absalom’s failed rebellion attempt, David’s kingdom is restored; how will he deal with those traitors? Enjoy your weekend.

Grade 7B

It was nice to return back to school this week after a refreshing March Break. The students finished a math unit and wrote a test on Friday; next week we will be beginning ratios, percentages, and proportions. In language arts, we began excitedly learning about radio plays and are looking forward to an end goal of recording radio plays in groups. Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend!

Grade 8

It has been a wonderful week back from March Break, especially as we had a couple of days with nice temperatures and beautiful sunshine. As we now enter the final stretch toward the end of the year, students are adjusting to the increased “high-school” level of responsibility. In Math, we have completed Chapter 7, which focused on one-step and two-step equations and inequalities, and most students wrote a test on Friday. If your child was on a basketball team and hasn’t yet written the test, they are expected to do so on Monday.

Next Tuesday, we will have a reading comprehension quiz on our novel study, Shattered. On Wednesday, we will have a presentation by “A Head Above Realty,” where we will explore some financial literacy concepts. It should be a fun and worthwhile presentation.

Next week will also be our final week with Ms. Otten! We hope she has enjoyed her practicum in Grade 8, and we wish her an educational and enjoyable final week.

Enjoy your weekend!
