General News

“Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” Eph 6:11

We have reached the end of the week, marked by a significant dumping of snow that began Wednesday night and continued well into Thursday. It is a welcome change to see the world blanketed in white rather than the muddy brown that has been finding its way into our halls and likely your homes.

As we near the midpoint of the school year, our staff is busy preparing report cards. A great deal of effort goes into assessing and carefully monitoring each student’s progress. Our hope is that these reports not only reflect the work completed so far but also serve as a springboard for future growth. We pray that this process supports our goal of excellence in education as we help students develop the talents they have been provided with.

This week, we look forward to a visit from Mr. Tomlin, a vice principal at Guido de Brès. He will be meeting with our grade 8 class to help them prepare for their upcoming transition to high school. We are thankful for our close relationship with Guido and the many supports in place to make this transition as smooth as possible.

The grade 5 class is also heading to the Hamilton Steam and Technology Museum. A highlight of the trip will be seeing the two massive, steam-powered beam engines that pumped water for Hamilton from 1859 to 1910. I am sure they will enjoy the trip and this unique look at history.

Finally, Mr. Reinink’s class will welcome a student teacher, Miss Naomi Van Vliet, who is studying at Niagara University for her teacher education. She hopes to spend the next seven weeks alongside Mr. Reinink, learning the ropes and honing her teaching skills. We welcome her and pray that this learning experience is a blessing for her.

Wishing you all a blessed weekend!

Classroom News

Kindergarten

This week started out wet and muddy and is ending with lots of snow! We hope everyone enjoyed their snow day.  During P.E. this week, everyone had a blast participating in a team building raft game, working together to move large mats to get across the gym.  In math, we are wrapping up our unit on numbers 1–10 and will begin a new unit on 2D and 3D shapes.  The Kindergarteners were very excited to start a new science unit focused on animals.  Next week, we will be hearing Bible stories about the Passover and crossing the Red Sea.  We are currently in need of more wipes in Kindergarten; if you are able to send in a pack, it would be greatly appreciated.  Please continue to dress your child for the weather, extra socks and mittens are very helpful.  Enjoy your snowy weekend and have a blessed Sunday.  DV/MV

Grade 1

The LORD is faithful; He has brought His people Israel into the Promised Land with a mighty hand. This week we learned about the conquering of Jericho, Achan stealing from God’s treasures, and how Ai was defeated. In math, we have begun adding and subtracting with larger numbers, which is quite a feat for our students. We continue to enjoy our second reader in reading class, which is about Gran and her grandchildren, Josh and Jen. Yes, we were very busy learning in Grade 1 this week!

Grade 2

We had a fun ~short~ week at school this week, with the bonus snow day! This is just a little reminder to double check that your child has all their snow gear with them so they can stay warm and be bundled up at recess time, and extra clothes in case they get wet. (especially socks) This week we continued learning about Nunavut in Social Studies. We talked about the Inuit people and what they do for fun. We’ve also been learning about where they live in comparison to our climate etc. We got to use the giant map of Canada as an extra bit of fun today, to help us visualize this all. In Math we have finished off our unit on time. Ask your child to show off their new skills at home. 🙂 Please remember that Friday is library day. We have a few students who keep forgetting to bring books back and we would love for them to pick out new books each week too. Have a great weekend!

Grade 3

What a wintry week! We experienced much colder temperatures, skating, and a snow day! What a joy this season is! In church history, we have been hearing about how the Lord gave strength of faith to Thomas Cranmer. Keep an eye on the agendas for a quiz date. In math, we switch from multiplication to division facts and we have been able to see that these two operations are part of the same fact family. Looking forward to another week of learning!

Memory Work: Psalm 64: 1; Exodus 20: 7-11 (2 weeks)

See agenda for spelling words

Grade 4

In CKLA we started our unit on the Middle Ages. The students are very eager to learn all about the Middle Ages because that means Medieval Day will be happening again this year in Grade 4. We have only just begun our CKLA unit so the day is still months away but neither the less it is great to see and hear how excited the students are for this special day! The students (and teachers) enjoyed the snow day on Thursday and recess has become so much more entertaining. Playing in the mud and water does not even compare to the snow! Next week Wednesday, the Lord willing, we will be going skating at West Lincoln Arena in Smithville. We are scheduled to go skating from 1:15-2:15. We plan to be at the arena for 1:00 and we would love to have parents/grandparents to come along to help tie skates and to skate with us. Just a reminder that students must have a helmet in order to go skating. Have a great weekend. FR/JB

Grade 5

With a somewhat unexpected snow day on Thursday, we have found ourselves at the end of another week in grade five! We had a fun afternoon of skating on Wednesday and students are settling back into routines. Both classes have enjoyed reading some different fantasy stories and were excited by anything from cats with wings to quests and journeys. We are excited to dive into The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe starting next week. Both classes are wrapping up Unit 3 for Bible, with 5A having a Bible test on Tuesday and 5B having theirs on Friday. On Thursday we will be going on a field trip to the Hamilton Museum of Steam and Technology. We will be away during the lunch hour so please make sure that your child has a non-microwavable lunch with them.

Devotions for next week are as follows:

5A: Gabriel (M), Autumn (Tu), Avalon (W), Levi (F)

5B: Hailey (M), Macy (Tu), Kenzie (W), Brynlee (F)
Have a blessed weekend! CDV/KV

Grade 6

This week, as part of our novel study, the students enjoyed stepping into Annemarie’s shoes and writing a formal letter to Papa. They had to use the information given in the novel, with the challenge to make it sound as if they were really experiencing it. Code language had to be used just in case the letter got into the enemy’s hands. In Bible History we transitioned into the story of Jacob and Esau. In Science we spend some time defining electricity and considering electrical safety. We will continue with these units next week, when we also look forward to enjoying a skating event again.  Have a blessed weekend! CVA BK MJ

Grade 7A

This past week we found ourselves firing on all cylinders as we continued to work our way through the curriculum. In art we were introduced to gesture drawings, quick and loose lines used to capture form and action. We learned of David’s conquests in Bible history and also learned what happened when he didn’t accompany the army into battle. We were introduced to thematic maps in geography and learned how we are affecting natural vegetation. Be sure to ask your child how their speech writing or poem memorization is progressing. Enjoy your weekend.

Grade 7B

On Friday, we completed the chapter on integers and will now begin learning about linear equations on Monday. Much of our Language Arts time is spent revising speeches. The students are encouraged to ask for help from family as they edit and revise, and are looking for feedback whether their sentences make sense and flow well. Your help is appreciated! We will have the grade 7 & 8 Geography Challenge this Wednesday. From here, the 2 finalists from our class will move on the the next round! Have a great week! RK

Grade 8

We will be doing a little catch up from our snow day. Monday, we have a science test, Tuesday, a history test, Wednesday a French quiz and 8B will have a geometry test while 8A has a test on their coding unit. Also ongoing is the speech and poetry prep for the grade 8 students. By the end of this week, poems should be fully memorized and speeches should be done and printed. On Friday our comic strip based on the epic poem The Song of Hiawatha is also due.

Have a great week, RT and TB
