“Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” Eph. 6:11
The May Victoria Day long weekend typically signals the beginning of summer. This year, however, those words may not ring quite as true. The weather has been colder than usual, which has been a blessing as we continue working our way through the curriculum.
One of the highlights of this coming week will be our annual school concert, entitled “To Live for Him.” We have been working hard on this production, and the program includes pre-concert performances from several of our students. The first concert is on Thursday at 1:00 PM, and the second is on Friday at 7:00 PM. On Friday, the doors to both the school and the church will open at 6:30 PM; there is no need to arrive earlier. A memo will be sent out with further particulars. For the Friday performance, we require students to wear their “Sunday best” to signify the hard work that has gone into the concert. Please remember that the school dress code still applies.
Baseball season will also wrap up this week. We have exhibition games on Wednesday after school and a tournament in Dorchester on Saturday. We sincerely thank our coaches—Mrs. Van Dam, Mrs. Muis, Mrs. Jansen, Mrs. DeVries, Mr. Nobel, and Mr. Mans—as their work and dedication are greatly appreciated.
We have two birthdays to celebrate this Tuesday. We wish a happy birthday to both Mrs. Rozema and Mrs. Stel. We hope they have a special day and wish them God’s blessings in the upcoming year. Additionally, on Wednesday evening, two of our newly hired staff members will graduate from CCRTC. We wish Miss Clarissa Lof and Miss Megan Van Iperen an enjoyable graduation and God’s blessings as they prepare to start their teaching careers at JCCS.
On Saturday at 9:00 AM, the property committee hopes to welcome you all to the school for a workday. While all the details are not yet finalized, we look forward to having extra hands to help keep our school beautiful. As the saying goes, many hands make light work. I believe that is all for the week. Wishing you all an enjoyable long weekend.

Classroom News
Kindergarten
It was a busy week in Kindergarten! Our Teddy Bear Picnic was a blast, and the students loved having their special teddy bears with them all day in the classroom. In Science, we are enjoying learning about what plants need to grow. Ask your child how our seed experiment is going! Everyone was thrilled to see how much their grass seed had grown and were excited to give it a haircut and take it home to show their families. We finished up our Math unit on teen numbers and will begin learning about skip counting next week. We also finished our Bible stories about Daniel. It was amazing to hear how God kept Daniel’s friends safe in the fiery furnace and protected Daniel in the lion’s den without a scratch on him. We are looking forward to our school concert next week. It will be a busy and exciting week as we prepare for the rehearsal, matinee, and evening performance. Reminder: KB students will come to school on Thursday instead of Friday next week. Enjoy your long weekend! DV/MV
Grade 1
Another week has flown by. We wrapped up our church history unit on Peter, Stephen, Paul, Guido de Brès, and Martin Luther, ending with a short Martin Luther movie that the students really enjoyed. Next week, we look forward to beginning our new Bible unit, God Blesses and Punishes His Covenant People. Our concert preparations are going very well. The children are singing with enthusiasm both in class and during formal practices, and we are excited to share their hard work with you at next week’s performances. In math, we have started a new unit on different types of graphs. In art, the students created beautiful spring pictures by carefully following step‑by‑step instructions from the board. We continue to keep Mrs. Boersema in our prayers as she recuperates after surgery. With the long weekend ahead, we wish everyone a restful and refreshing break. We look forward to welcoming the children back to school on Tuesday.
Grade 2
Good afternoon 🙂 Grade 2 has been learning about habitats in Science in connection with our Investigating Animals unit, and some students have been using their recess to do some animal and insect exploring. In Bible we continue to study the stories of Paul and his missionary journeys. In math a number of students are struggling through the math lessons where they need to regroup and borrow to subtract. Check with them, maybe by giving them a question or two at home. Remember we’re into triple digits now – and borrowing for either the ones, tens, or even both. Once again, the schoolyard is wet, and we have a lot of students that have forgotten their extra socks. Please send some with your child. Also 2B is running short on tissues, if you are able to help us out by providing a box, we would greatly appreciate it. Looking forward to the concert next week! Have a great long weekend!
Grade 3
Isaiah 60:1 reads, “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.” We spent lots of time this week singing ‘O church, Arise’ by the Gettys, which quotes this verse. Students are working hard to memorize our concert songs and we look forward to presenting them next week! In Bible History, we will be looking at Israel’s continued time in the wilderness after Mount Sinai. In science, grade 3 can look forward to learning about soils and plants.

“The world is a wonderful place when you are young!” What a delightful quote from Charlotte’s Web. In Chapter 3, Wilbur the pig escapes from his pen and jumps and runs wildly about, but he soon realizes that it is better to be back in his pen where things are safe and where he can eat to his heart’s content. As we reflect on this situation, perhaps we can make some connections to our own lives as well. We look forward to continuing this novel next week as we learn more about life on a farm, the realities of livestock, the value of friendship, and the importance of loyalty. Ironically, in science we will also be exploring food chains and food webs in nature, and how so many living and non-living things are interconnected. In math, we will continue learning about the measurement of temperature and time. When you can, ask your child to tell the time or check the temperature — or even better, perhaps let them help make cookies or do some baking to reinforce some of the learning taking place at school. The students are also busy identifying and learning the notes on the recorder. (Our apologies to those who get to hear the practicing at home!) The hard work is paying off, and the students are making great progress. Apparently, some students are even planning to do a little performance before the concert next week. Amazing!
Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

Grade 5
After a chilly past few days, we are looking forward to warmer weather and the long weekend ahead! Both classes have been hard at work and next week looks to be a very busy week. 5A hopes to wrap up Chapter 10 in Math with a test on Wednesday, and 5B will wrap up Chapter 9 with a test on Friday. We have been practicing some events for our upcoming Play Day in June and will be switching over to baseball on Thursday. Please send your child to school with a baseball glove on Thursday if it is possible. If you have any extra gloves that they are able to bring with them for those that don;t have, that would be much appreciated! A glove will be needed for the following Phys. Ed classes as well. On Thursday and Friday we look forward to the whole school joining their voices together as we give thanks for the ascension of our Saviour and the promise that He will come again to take us to Himself. The students have been putting in a lot of work to ensure that they are ready for these performances and we look forward to seeing you all there! Devotions for next week are as follows:
5A: Megan (T), Jasper (W), Gabe (Th), Autumn (F)
5B: Brynlee (Tu), Quinn (W), Landon (Th), Gabriel (F)
Enjoy your long weekend! CDV/KV

Bible/Church History: In the coming weeks, we will complete a short assignment before turning to the life of Joseph.
Math: Our study of integers has flown by, and we look towards wrapping up our unit in the next week!
L.A.: Lost in the Barrens has officially caught our attention, and students are working hard to complete their “roles” to facilitate meaningful discussions with their peers.
French: Students have completed and presented their French “Family Albums.” We now turn our focus to how we might plan a trip en francais.
Science/Social Studies: We’ve begun to look at how Indigenous peoples may have made their way into North America after the Biblical events of the Flood and the Tower of Babel. We will continue to learn more about different Indigenous groups in Canada.
Art: Students will be playing around with perspective as we create masks in the art style of Kimmy Cantrell!
Phys. Ed.: As the weather continues to grow warmer, we hope to get outside more and more. Baseball remains our primary focus, but Track and Field events will also play a role.
Enjoy your long weekend!

Grade 6B
Next week we look forward to presenting our annual concert to the community. The students are excited to share the songs they have been working on for the program. As we continue reading the novel, Lost in the Barrens we are learning vocabulary words that go with the northern area of Canada. Ask your child if they know the following: muskeg, ptarmigan, maelstrom, hummock, tamaracks, and lichens. The weather for the long weekend looks absolutely beautiful. We hope and pray that the students can enjoy lots of time outside enjoying our Father’s creation. Have a blessed long weekend! CVA MJ
Grade 7A
Our study of foundations in personal finance have moved on to our next chapter, “Education, Careers and Entrepreneurship”. We’ll learn about such terms as passive income, portfolio income, salary, tuition and entrepreneur. In Phys. Ed. we’ll continue to review and practice our track and field events; it’ll be the pits. William Farel has convinced the young Frenchman to stay in Geneva. We’ll learn how the Libertines and other free, fun loving citizens of Geneva will react to the reforms. Enjoy your long weekend.
Grade 7B
At time of writing, we are looking forward to a local trip to visit some of the battle sites of the war of 1812. We are currently working through the development of Upper Canada after the war, including the Welland Canal and the Underground Railroad. We will be moving through the chapters quickly as the year-end approaches. In math class, we have moved on to part 3 of Foundations in Personal Finance. In the coming week, this will include completing quizzes that allow them to see what potential career path would suit their interests and abilities. The Hobbit novel study has begun and will be continuing for quite some time. After learning about the author, we have read and completed the accompanying paperwork for chapters 1 – 3, and watched a part of the movie adaption. Wishing you all a warm long weekend! Enjoy! RK
Grade 8
It appears that this week of cold and dreary weather has made way for what looks like a beautiful Victoria Day weekend. It is hard to believe that we are at this point of the school year already!
Next week is a busy one, as the Pentecost concert will take up the end of our week. We look forward to the matinee performance on Thursday afternoon and our evening performance on Friday. We also have a whole-school concert practice on Wednesday.
As for regular programming, students can look forward to an open-note Geography test on Tuesday.
Enjoy your long weekend!
