This edition of the Chronicle will cover two weeks due to next week having only three school days. Staff will return to school for the Compass Reformed Educators conference on October 24th and 25th, hosted by Grace Christian School in Millgrove. We always feel excited and recharged by these events, returning with many new ideas to implement in our classrooms.
After the excitement of Fallfest, we will resume our learning this coming week. The School Spirit Service Team has organized a 70s-themed School Spirit Day, and it will be exciting to see attire from 50 years ago in our halls.
Volleyball season is upon us! If you are interested in coaching volleyball, please reach out to me at principal@johncalvinschool.com.
On October 27th, we will celebrate Mrs. Spoelstra’s birthday. We wish her God’s continued care and blessings in the upcoming year.

Kindergarten
It was a short but sweet week in Kindergarten. The children continued learning about patterns and had fun creating their own with our math cubes. Next week, we will be going to Bry-Anne Pumpkin Patch. If you haven’t reached out to let us know you’d like to join us, please do so ASAP. There will be no Library on this day. Please make sure you are checking your child’s agenda bag and taking out any papers that have been sent home. A reminder that next week is another short week, Thursday and Friday are P.D days. The following week, please join us for our Reformation assembly. We hope to see you all at Fall Fest and have a wonderful weekend! MV/DV
Grade 1
This week and next, the children may enjoy a shorter week. The children have been learning about how God used Joseph to save Jacob and his family in Bible class. Counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s are keeping us busy in math class. In Reading, we are blending sounds together to read words; exciting stuff. Keep practicing those tricky words as this will help us read!! We look forward to beginning to read our first reader. Next Wednesday is 70’s dress up day. Have fun coming up with great dress up ideas.
Grade 2
We hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving long weekend! We enjoyed a nice short week in Grade 2 and are looking forward to another three-day week next week! We continued with our Bible stories about Jesus’ ministry. We ended this week with a test on solids and liquids. Next week we plan to start our second science unit on simple machines and movement. We are also starting our next math unit, which focuses on geometry and measurement. Please remember to dress warm! The weather is starting to get cooler, and our classrooms have been very cold! We are looking forward to our 70s Day school dress-up day! Have a great weekend! MB & BV
Grade 3
Hello again! It’s been a short but busy week. Looking forward to seeing everyone on Saturday, Fallfest. May the Lord bless the efforts of us all as we give God the glory.
In our Bible classes we are back in Genesis. The Lord continues to uphold His covenant with Abram and us His children too.
In Language Arts, we are enjoying the CKLA stories and lessons. Let’s remember to try our best for the glory of God, girls and boys.
Grade 3B has their first spelling test on October 23. Check agendas for the words.

From the sounds of things, students enjoyed their long Thanksgiving weekend! Next week is also another short week. Despite this, there is still lots of learning happening in our classrooms. Grade 4A successfully experimented with sugar cubes, food colouring and water to demonstrate the effects of weathering and erosion on rocks. Grade 4B is going to attempt this experiment next week – exciting! Both classes will compete in their first spelling bee today!
Grade 4B had their geometry quizzes returned. Students were given the opportunity to re-do up to 2 sections of the test to improve their mark. There is no need to sign and return these quizzes. Several students still owe Mrs. Stel a signed Church History quiz – please jot a note in the agenda if you can no longer find it. A short week for Gr. 6 as we come out of the Thanksgiving break. Actually, we have back to back short weeks as the Teachers Convention next week Thursday and Friday means that students only have 3 days of school next week as well. In Science we have wrapped up our first unit on Flight and will now switch gears to Social Studies in Oct. 21. We have also wrapped up our first Church History unit and now turn our attention to the Book of Genesis as we begin Bible History. This Saturday is the annual FallFest! One can certainly feel the buzz in the air. Have a blessed weekend. Mrs. VanAndel and Mr. J
Grade 6B
October, definitely, seems to be the month for many extra curricular activities. Even though this week was a shorter one, much work has been accomplished. We are nearing the end of many of our units, so expect a number of tests in the coming weeks. Next week is once again a short week as we teachers head off to Flamborough to attend the Teacher’s Conference. Students have been working on a number of posters/poems/essays to hand in for the Legion’s Remembrance Day Contest. Thursday and Friday would be great days for them to complete those. Entry and Permission forms for these are in your child’s agenda. These need to be handed into the Legion by October 31, so please make sure to have all permission forms and entries back in school by Wednesday, October 30th. Have a great couple of weeks. SO/EV

It was a bit chilly on Wednesday as we delivered flyers throughout Smithville for FallFest, but we were able to do our part for this fundraiser. We ran the multi stage fitness test on Thursday instead of the regular Tuesday, a good thing to do after Thanksgiving Weekend. Our study of David and Saul will take a twist as we will follow two plot lines and meet a witch. The students will soon be introduced to the Science Fair and they will need to decide on a topic as well as how to complete the study, solo or in a group; more details to follow. Enjoy your weekend.
Grade 7B
The students slowly eased back into their school work on Wednesday by spending the morning delivering Fall Fest Flyers. Thank you for your service in delivering those flyers grade 7! Next week will be a busy one for grade 7B with a math test on Tuesday and short History and French quizzes on Wednesday. Please encourage your child to study hard for these; they will be rewarded with a nice long weekend again:)
Grade 8
A short and busy week this week. Next week, we have another 3 days week as well. Count on a Math Test on Chapter 2 Tuesday, and a Science Test on Chapter 1 and 2 on Wednesday. Students will also need to remember to complete their lab logbooks for submission by next Wednesday.
The week of October 28th – November 1, we will likely also have a Bible test over the first 16 lessons of the Ministry of Christ.
The week after (October 28 to November 1) is another busy one for us, as we are doing our Veggie Chop on Wednesday and then bagging our veggies on Thursday. Thank you to all who have sent in orders to help us with our Ottawa Trip Fundraiser. We sincerely appreciate it. Have a wonderful weekend, RT and TB
