General News

“Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.” Job 28:28

It was exciting to celebrate 60 years of JCCS.   At the assembly, we had time to reflect on God’s faithfulness through the generations.   With 1746 students graduated from the school since its inception we can be thankful that we have had God’s providence as we educated covenant children to the fear of the Lord.   We thank our coordinating group for this event, Mrs. D Ravensbergen, Mrs. Spoelstra, Mrs. Stel, Mrs. Stoffels, and Mrs. Vis for their work in coordinating this event.   Some students said that they had the best afternoon ever!  A special thanks also goes out to the Ladies Auxiliary and Norker for their help with this event

If you would like a commemorative toque, we still have some available at the reasonable cost of $10.

We are excited to share some staffing updates for January!

  • Mrs. Tigchelaar will be returning to our team following her maternity leave. She will be teaching Grade 4 two days a week.
  • Mrs. Stel will continue to teach Grade 4 three days a week.

You might be wondering about Mrs. Baartman. She will be transitioning to the Resource Department, where she will take on the role of Resource Coordinator in a 50% position.

To better support our students, we have separated the two roles that Mrs. Stoffels has fulfilled over the years: Learning Resource Coordinator and Special Education Resource Teacher (SERT). This change will enable Mrs. Stoffels, our SERT, to work with more students and provide enhanced support where it is needed most.

We’re excited about these changes and confident they will greatly benefit our students and staff.

On Wednesday, December 11th we will have a pizza lunch served by the ladies auxiliary.  We give thanks for this delightful change in our lunch routine.

I believe that is all for this week. May God continue to provide and sustain us in the upcoming week.

Classroom News

Kindergarten

We started the week celebrating the school’s 60th anniversary, we enjoyed a yummy lunch and lots of fun activities outside. Thank you to everyone who made the day special. With the colder weather, we want to remind you to make sure you are sending appropriate outerwear for your child. Extra mittens are a good idea as well!  We finished up our Math unit on numbers 0-5 and are excited to learn numbers 6-10. We’ve been busy learning new letters each day and are starting to be able to read some words with them! We have begun reading about Jesus’ birth and have been busy learning our songs for the Christmas Assembly. A reminder, next Wednesday is Pizza Day. Have a great weekend! MV/DV

Grade 1

Great is Thy faithfulness. It was a very special 60th anniversary day for JCCS last Monday. The children thoroughly enjoyed their games, s’mores and hot chocolate in the afternoon after a delicious lunch of french fries and chicken nuggets. Thank you to all for organizing this wonderful day. Above all, we may thank God for His goodness and pray for His continued faithfulness in the years to come. In Bible History, we have finished another unit with a test. We will continue to learn about God’s chosen people as they travel through the wilderness to the promised land. We are learning to count with coins as we have begun our financial literacy unit in math. Continue to practise reading/memorizing our tricky words and spelling words every day. In art, we have learned about an artist named Henri Matisse who loved to ‘paint’ with scissors, glue and colourful paper in order to create beautiful collages. Another project that kept us busy was learning the colours in the colour wheel. Ask us what we created with our colour wheel. Have a restful weekend and blessed Sunday.

Grade 2

We’ve had a fun – yet soggy week at school this past week, with the recent snowfall. Please see that your child has the appropriate outdoor clothing with them, as well as an extra set of socks here. Although the students loved learning about Simple Machines and Movement, we look forward to switching from Science to Social Studies and starting our new unit on Nunavut. In Bible/Church History studies we continue learning about the worship service and the sacraments this week. Your child will have received a paper to take to church with them, this past week, to mark steps that they see happen in their churches on Sunday. If they didn’t get to it, encourage them to try fill it in this weekend yet. In Math we are finishing up our unit on Place Value. Check with your child to see what they’ve learned. Next week Wednesday we’re looking

forward to a pizza lunch provided by the ladies Auxiliary. Have a great weekend and a blessed Sunday! BV/MB

Grade 3

Great is Thy Faithfulness!  We thank the LORD for the beautiful day we could celebrate on Monday.  The love for Christian education and the communion of saints was felt.  Thank you for joining us. In our Bible classes, we hear of God’s faithfulness to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He keeps His promises. Math is all about multiplication!  Please practice your multiplication facts at home too.  Thank you. That’s it for now. Have a blessed weekend!

Psalm 72:1

Text:  Exodus 20:1-6 (two weeks)

Please check your child’s agenda for the spelling words.  Take the time to practice them daily, grade three.

Grade 4

The students enjoyed the 60th anniversary celebration on Monday, being treated to a special lunch of chicken nuggets and French fries (thanks Norker!) plus an afternoon of outdoor games that included s’mores and hot chocolate! Next week Wednesday, a pizza lunch is scheduled – hurray, no lunches to make! With just 2 weeks left of school before the Christmas break, students are hard at work in their regular classes. They are busy learning weather statements and clothing in French in preparation for a weather report presentation. Grade 4B is studying the life of John Hus in Church History and financial literacy in math – both of these units should wrap up before the break.

Grade 5

What an enjoyable day we had on Monday! We loved having so many people come and celebrate with us, and we especially thank Mrs. Henrietta Buikema, a former teacher at JCCS, for telling 5B a story! God’s faithfulness and care is so evident as we look back at the last 60 years. This coming week, we look forward to a pizza lunch on Wednesday! We continue to study Jesus’ life and ministry in Bible class. 5B may have a test at the end of the week on the first half of Unit 3.
Devotions for next week are:
5A – Emma (M), Nash (Tu), Tayson (W), Harper (Th), Mason (F)
5B – Scott (M), Jocelyn (Tu), Maelle (W), Michaela (Th), Helayna (F)
Have a wonderful weekend! RK/KV

Grade 6A

Last week we enjoyed a wonderful day at the Warplane Heritage Museum. This week we look back on Monday’s wonderful celebration. Especially reflecting on the LORD”s blessings to us and our community during the past 60 years. The students will hold onto fond memories of this day, especially the afternoon games and activities. Thanks to all those who organized the festivities and the food. Something to consider before Christmas: if you haven’t donated any mission money for a while could you please consider doing so? CVA MJ

Grade 6B

This week we finally have been able to enjoy some “real” winter weather.  The snow just makes recess time more enjoyable somehow.  With that in mind…a gentle reminder…to encourage your child to dress appropriately for the weather and, maybe send an extra pair of socks along. Just in case. 🙂 The next couple of weeks before Christmas will see the students writing a number of smallish mid-unit quiz/tests in a few of their subjects. It’s always better to break the testing of a unit up in this way than to ask the students to try and retain all those facts once they return from their holidays. Be sure to keep an eye on their agendas for when these will be happening. Have a wonderful weekend and a blessed Sunday. SO/EV

Memory Work: Psalm 114:1

Text: Psalm 47:1-4

Friday: Vocab/Spelling Test L. 20

Devotions: M. Matthew, Tu. Brooklynn, W. Ezra, Th. Meghan, Fr. Robby

Grade 7A

Next week we’ll be wrapping up our math unit covering expressions and equations, and we’ll move on to integers. Carrying on with graphic novels, we’ll divide our selected short story into manageable parts and each group member will be responsible for a page. We’ll learn about views and angles, call out bubbles and panels. In geography we’ll learn how the LORD uses natural forces to warn us of our Saviour’s return and display His power. Low order co-operative games are the focus until the winter break in phys. ed. Enjoy your weekend.

Grade 7B

This week, the students began working on an exciting graphic novel project for language arts class. We are beginning to wrap up our unit in math on integers; there will be a test likely next week Friday. We definitely saw real life examples of integers with the freezing temperatures this week! In French class, the students learned to conjugate regular er verbs in the present tense, so they are beginning to have the ability to write many full sentences in French. There will be a brief quiz on er verbs next week Tuesday. Have a great weekend!

Grade 8

Thanks to all who helped support our Poinsettia Fundraiser, we raised a little over $900 for our graduation. 8B can count on a Geography Chapter 3 test on Tuesday. 8A will be doing History presentations on Monday and Tuesday. In gym, students are teaching the class their low order cooperative games. We have officially started a new Ch. History unit as well. In writing, we will be spending the week working on a 5 paragraph essay on Tom Sawyer (due Friday).

Wishing all a great weekend, RT and TB
