“Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.” Job 28:28
We are already heading into the last week of January. We have enjoyed some Canadian winter weather with the extreme cold and snow. This means that we have had a great deal of usage of Mount Calvin. Students have been anticipating their turns to go tobogganing. This has been more welcome than wetness and mud. Please continue to ensure that your children have their proper winter wear for these cooler days.
On Thursday we enjoyed our Western Day, where even some wanted posters appeared, looking out for a person telling bad jokes. hmmm…
Staff will be working on the science curriculum and report cards on Monday and Tuesdays. These PD days coincide with Guido’s turnaround days, allowing some families a little breather from school in the middle of winter. This also signals the beginning of Term 2 for JCCS. The marks collected from here on in will go to the next set of reports.
Speaking of report cards, you will notice that there are some variations in the report card at this moment. With our move to PowerSchool, the report card templates were changed based on the input of staff. We hope the layout will allow for clearer communication and consistency. What you will notice is that the kindergarten report cards are quite different from the past version. The four-block version comes from the 2016 version of the K curriculum. This anecdotal report was often hard for parents to decipher. The new reports have more categories in them with specific areas where we hope to show the progress of your children. So, when the reports arrive home, you may see some variation in adoption but at least you will know where we are heading.
I believe that is all for the week. May God strengthen and bless us in the upcoming week.

Kindergarten
It was a cold and snowy week, but the kindergarteners loved it and stayed warm playing in the snow, ice and sledding on Mount Calvin. Skating at the arena was thoroughly enjoyed and we were impressed with how well the kids did. Thank you to all the parents and grandparents that came to help. In math we are still working on counting teen numbers. In Bible, we heard about how God helped the Israelites cross the Red Sea. On Thursday, it was fun to see all the cowboys and cowgirls in the classroom for western day. Monday and Tuesday are PD days, we hope you enjoy your extra long weekend! See you all on Wednesday. Grade 1
How amazing it is to experience the very cold temperatures at the same time as teaching the children about seasonal change. Ask your child to tell you about how God created time and seasons. In our Bible classes, we’ve begun to study the time of the judges. The students have learned about Deborah and Gideon and will hear about Samson next week. We’re getting quite close to our 100th day of school! The Lord willing, this will fall on February 12. We will be dressing up as 100 year old men and women. We’ll also be enjoying a number of special activities. Stay tuned for opportunities to help out that day! That’s all for this week. Enjoy the extra-long weekend!
Grade 2
This week, Grade 2 enjoyed outdoor recesses even though it was super cold! On Thursday we had lots of cowboys and cowgirls in the classroom! We loved our Western dress-up day! This week we finished our Social Studies unit on Nunavut. The students loved watching videos and seeing pictures of what life is like in the Arctic. Next week, we plan to start our new unit on Zimbabwe! Our current unit in Math is on 2-digit addition and subtraction. It will be very helpful for the students to know their single-digit facts. Please keep practicing the flashcards at home! Have a great, extra-long weekend! MB & BV
Grade 3
Next week, we look forward to just 3 days in the classroom. Students can expect to hear about Joseph’s trials in Egypt in our Bible unit. In math, we continue on with division facts and strategies. 3A will have a big spelling dictation on Friday, while 3B will have no words next week.
Memory Work: Psalm 95: 1; Exodus 20: 12 – 17

Grade 4B will have a math quiz on measurement, as well as a Church History quiz on our unit from Rev. Van Raalte next Friday. The words will be in the agenda as well as here below. Grade 6A
Greetings from grade 6A! A busy January week has come and gone. In Church History we dug deeper into the history of the Crusades and the real motivating factors behind these ‘holy wars’. In language arts we have started our new novel study discussing what it was like to be a slave in the mid 1800’s in Virginia. Next week in math we hope to start a new geometry unit. While the students look forward to an extra two days off next week, they need to remember that they still will need to know Ps.68:1 by the end of the week! Have a blessed weekend! CVA MJ
Grade 6B
What a cold wintery week we have had! We are very thankful to see the temperatures rising a little. I’m sure that Mrs. Van Egmond has been enjoying the much warmer temperature down in Florida. We have written quite a few tests this week.. Your child should have already shown you their Science test. The class did very well on this one and the Math test was written today. I hope to have those marked sometime in the next week or so. Keep an eye out in your child’s agenda. Western Day was a success with many coming in outfitted for the wild west…horse and all! Next week will be a short week as Monday and Tuesday are PD days. Have a fantastic looong weekend and a wonderful, blessed Sunday. SO/EV

Grade 7A
While next week will be a shorter week, there will be no lack of work to do on Gr. 7A’s part. Front and center will be the completion of the Science Fair project, specifically the completion of the tri-fold boards. Students will have some supplies available at work and they may take some from home as well. We’ll circle back in Math and have a test on plane geometry. After we put our graphic novels together and appreciate them, we’ll move on to poetry in LA. In music appreciation we’ll learn about G.F. Handel’s God given talents and his father’s wishes… Enjoy your long weekend.
Grade 7B
Grade 7 has been busy this week working hard on their science fair projects. It was exciting to see the students collaborating and putting the projects together on their backboards. The graphic novel projects were finally finished this week with some impressive results. In French, we started a new unit about giving directions in French and are going to be working with maps next week. Next week, we look forward to diving into poetry in language arts. Have a wonderful weekend!
Grade 8
We hope that everyone has a great extended weekend spending time with family and friends. Students at this point have had close to 20 hours of work time on Science Fair (we dedicated 4 full classes to it this week alone). There will be 3 more work times next week. Please check in with your child and make sure things are moving along. You should have received an email giving a breakdown on final due dates of the science fair projects. Blessings, RT & TB
