General News

“Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.” Job 28:28

With this edition of the Chronicle we are reaching the end of March. You might ask, where does the time go?  We see calendars full of events, we see faithful education happening each and every day.  Some highlights from the week include mummification in grade 5, a construction day in grade 3, fraction reduction in grade 6, reading clocks in grade 4, learning about Modest Mussorgsky in grade 8 music, and the list goes on. God reveals himself in so many ways through creation, drawing the connection between history, math, and language to who God is helps us understand what it means to fear the Lord as we seek to live a life that is in service to God and our neighbour.

I have a few reminders for the week.  We thank those who have already donated to the West Lincoln Community Care Food drive, and remind you that we would like to have those barrels full by the end of the week as we seek to support those in need.

Today we said farewell to Miss DeVries, Miss Wilpstra, and Miss Otten as they have completed their practicum here at JCCS. We pray for God’s blessings in their future studies.  We look forward to seeing Miss DeVries back here in the fall.

That concludes this week’s update. May God strengthen and bless us all in the week to come.

Classroom News

Kindergarten

Another week has flown by in Kindergarten.  We had a lot of fun doing a collaborative spring art project and buddy reading with grade 8, thank you grade 8!  In science we started a new unit on plants, ask your child about the seed experiment we are doing and their predictions.  We are looking forward to our teddy bear picnic and pajama dress up on Wednesday, this will be a fun-filled day for both classes.  We can’t wait to see all your special teddy bears in the classroom.  Our Bible stories will be about David and Goliath and King Saul and God’s plan for a new King.  Have a great weekend! Grade 1

The children had a busy week of learning! In Bible, we heard how the LORD chose a man after His own heart. We also learned that David, though a sinful man, was forgiven by God in His love and mercy. Next week, we look forward to learning about Solomon. In Social Studies, the children explored the stories of a courageous young man, Terry Fox, the heroic Sir Isaac Brock, and Roberta Bondar, an astronaut, expanding their understanding of perseverance, study, and bravery. We also wrapped up another math unit with a test and are excited to begin learning about fractions in the coming weeks. Please continue practicing spelling words and tricky words daily—it truly makes a difference! Also, keep reviewing the new sound cards and store them in a safe place.

Grade 2

This week grade 2 has been excitedly busy with the beginning of their novel study – curious about who took Annie’s picture. In Church history we finished up our stories learning about Pelagius and Augustine, and their work for or against God’s Word. Grade 2 continues to be excited about each new lesson in Science, whether doing an experiment or learning about water and air in our environment. In Math we are working with double digit subtraction and regrouping. Please continue to practice math facts at home with your child. 😊 Have a great weekend. BV&MB

Grade 3

Bonjour!  Hello!  Hallo!

Grade three worked hard this week.  We started a new unit on measurement.  Ask us to measure something for you. In Bible, we hear how the Lord shows His power and glory to Pharaoh and Egypt! We thank the Lord for keeping His covenant promises in leading the Israelites out of Egypt. We will be having a Bible test on Friday.  We say farewell to Miss Claire DeVries. Grade 3B totally enjoyed her teaching and we look forward to welcoming her as a colleague in September (DV). May the Lord continue to bless your studies for His glory.  That’s it for now.

Grade 4

It’s been a bit of a wintery week, but we won’t let that stop us from looking forward to spring weather in the first week of April! Grade 4B has started a number of new units this week including our King Arthur unit in Reading and Time & Temperature in Math. Both grades have finished the first unit on the kings of Israel, wrapping up our stories of Ahab, Jezebel, and Elijah. We will start hearing about Elisha’s work next week. We are also knee-deep in concert practice which means that music class and memory work texts have been placed on the backburner for now.

We have enjoyed having Miss Wilpstra in our classroom, and will be sad to see her go! We wish her well as she returns to CCRTC. Devotions for 5A: Ethan (M), Blake (Tu), Oliver (W), Taurie (Th), Maddison (F), And for 5B: Oliver (M), Aiden (Tu), Jace (W), Scott (Th), Jocelyn (F). Have a great week! RK/KVL

Grade 6A

The students have been challenged to learn various items of clothing in French. Now they are writing short sentences to match the correct spelling of the colours to match the clothing. The challenge, of course, is to know whether the item is masculine or feminine. Next week the next phase of the slide presentation will be completed by adding pictures and 1 or 2 short videos. In History we worked our way through the Viking explorations, concluding with their arrival on the coast of Newfoundland in L’Anse Aux Meadows. Next we turn our attention to the age of exploration and the European movement towards the new world. This past week we enjoyed our 3rd skating trip of the season. We really appreciated the extra ice time opportunities this year! Have a blessed weekend! CVA MJ

Grade 6B

This week the students wrapped up their unit on Explorers.  Our next topic will be Canada’s indigenous people which ties in well to our upcoming study of the novel “Lost in the Barrens”.  Grade 6B has also begun a new unit on Space.  We have enjoyed watching a few movies that help us to understand how to defend our belief that God created the universe against the secular concept of evolution.  We are now going to focus our studies on the wonder and beauty of the nebulae.  Ask your child which nebula they are researching.

Early next week we plan to bring our math chapter on equations and inequalities to a close. Next up will be rate, proportion and percent. After learning about actions towards climate change, including mitigation and adaptation, we’ll move on to our next chapter dealing with the changing patterns of vegetation.  In history students have selected a battle from the War of 1812 and are researching it with the end goal of presenting an interactive battle map… exciting! Gr. 7 A/B have been divided into groups and have selected a radio play script that they will record and present to the class in the near future. Enjoy your weekend.

Grade 7B

The students have been flying through the Math unit on proportions and ratios this week, and we are looking forward to joining grade 7A next week to discuss financial literacy, specifically saving and budgeting. The students began a unit in French about different foods and have been writing a recipe for pizza; they will be putting this recipe into good use next Tuesday in the kitchen :). In Language Arts, we’ve been working on an exciting radio plays project where the students will be using their dramatization and expression skills to record a play. Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend!

Grade 8

Another week has come and gone in Grade 8, and we begin by bidding farewell to Ms. Otten. We pray that she has had an enjoyable time working with our Grade 8 students and wish her continued blessings as she returns to the teachers’ college to complete her academic year.

This week, we enjoyed a presentation by Henk from A Head Above Real Estate, where we explored the wonderful world of home ownership. The key takeaway? SAVE, SAVE, SAVE!

Next week, we will build on this presentation with a project in which students will research houses, run the numbers, and answer questions about how financial choices impact both their lives and our community.

We look forward to a full week of regularly scheduled programming. Enjoy your weekend!
