“Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.” Job 28:28

We eagerly anticipate sharing our students’ learning with you at our annual Open House this Friday! Join us as we open our doors and showcase the enriching work happening within our classrooms. It’s a fantastic opportunity to witness firsthand how, in partnership with parents, we share God’s glorious promises and His wonderful knowledge across all subjects. We deeply value the trust placed in us and the incredible support our community provides to our school and its mission of assisting parents in the covenant education of their children.

We extend a warm invitation to grandparents, parents, and friends to come and experience JCCS!

  • Doors open at 8:00 AM.
  • Recess will be from 10:00 – 10:30 AM.
  • At 11:30 AM, we warmly welcome all grandparents to a delicious lunch in the gym, generously provided by the Ladies Auxiliary.

Following what promises to be a delightful and engaging morning at our Open House, we are also looking forward to our annual Hike for Hospice on Friday afternoon. This event provides a refreshing opportunity for our students to stretch their legs and expend some energy after a morning of showcasing their learning (and perhaps enjoying too many sweets from visiting grandparents!). Our students have been diligently working to gather pledges in support of this worthy cause.  We are enthusiastic about reaching our fundraising goal of $17,500 and appreciate your support in this endeavor!

On Monday we celebrate Mrs. Ravensbergen’s birthday.  We wish her God’s blessing in the upcoming year.  We give thanks for her work and dedication here at JCCS.

On Wednesday we will have our Membership Meeting.  We look forward to hearing the reports and celebrating some staff milestones as well.   We look forward to seeing you there.

I believe that is all for the week. We look forward to God’s care and providence as we head into the next week which also includes an election, May He continue to provide for Canada so that it can remain Glorious, Strong and Free.

Kindergarten

The children were excited to be back at school after a long weekend and eager to share everything they did for Easter. We were happy to have some warmer weather and enjoyed some extra time outside on Wednesday afternoon. We are continuing with our teen numbers and the children are having an easier time understanding the new numbers. We have come to the end of the alphabet, finishing our last letter this week! Ask your child if they remember what letter usually follows the letter “q”. Next week, we look forward to our Open House on Friday morning and the McNally walk in the afternoon. Please let us know if you are able to join us for the walk. A reminder that KA students will come to school Friday, not Thursday. We hope to see you all there. Have a wonderful weekend! MV/DV

Grade 1

This week we enjoyed starting a new unit of church history. Our theme is “To gather and care for His Church, God uses weak and sinful people from all times and places.” We began by looking at how God uses preachers like Peter at Pentecost to spread His Word to all nations. Next week we will continue by also looking at how God uses martyrs (Stephen) and missionaries (Paul). In our language arts we began reading about the fictional Green Fern Zoo, with Vern as the tour guide. The students are excited about this unit, and love to try to get a sneak peak at stories we will be reading in the coming weeks. Grade 1B was pleased to welcome Mrs. Poort back from her beautiful and restful trip across the ocean to see her family in the Netherlands. Thank you so much to Mrs.VanBrederode, who so capably stepped in and taught during that time. We look forward to Open House next week and hope to see many of you there! Have a blessed weekend!

Grade 2

We’ve turned our attention back to the CKLA program to a new unit called Sir Gus in our Language Arts studies this week. The students are excited to read about a knight and look forward to finding out what adventures he will have. They’ve made some guesses about him, but will have to wait and see. We’ll have finished up with our unit on Air, Water and the Environment so we have started a new unit on Investigating Animals in our Science class. Please ask your son or daughter if they have any spare clothes at school, it seems many don’t have extras left here. Grade 2 is looking forward to seeing you at the Open House next week. Enjoy your weekend. BV&MB

Grade 3

Another short but busy week has passed.

We finished our Bible unit with a test.  We continue to hear stories of how the LORD travels with HIs people to the promised land.  He is faithful and His plans will be fulfilled. In our math classes we continue to explore multiplication. Continue to practice those multiplication facts, grade three!

Psalm 77:5

Text:  Psalm 23:1-3

Please check your child’s agenda for the spelling words. Take the time to study them too! Looking forward to seeing you all at the Open House and McNally Walk on May 2. (DV)

Grade 4

We’ve had a good week here in Grade 4! It’s been good to have a regular week (even if a bit shorter) after the busyness of the concerts and the Easter weekend and we’ve been able to make good progress in our learning. Grade 4B will have a Bible test on Thursday next week to wrap up the kings of Israel in Bible history and then move on to the kingdom of Judah. Grade 4A completed learning all about the kingdom of Israel and just started learning about the kingdom of Judah. Grade 4A also completed two very difficult and challenging units in math on division and multiplication. Well done Grade 4A!. Next week we will be starting fractions.

Spelling words (review lesson): cousins, built, minutes, does, different, interesting, months, weather, science, lesson, except, kitchen, adventure, computer, they’re

Grade 5

Next week is a special week for us! We are looking forward to the Shaw Festival play on Thursday, as well as Open House and the Hike for Hospice on Friday! The play begins at 1:00, which means that we will not be back at school on time for the afternoon buses. We will send an email to notify you when we are leaving the venue with an ETA. Devotions for 5A – Hailey (M), Adelaide (Tu), Victoria (W), Ethan (F), and for 5B – Abigail (M), Rayna (Tu), Oliver (W), Aiden (F). Hope to see you at the Open House! RK/KVL

Grade 6A

What a beautiful time of the year for the students to enjoy playing outside. Next week Mr. J is off to a conference in Edmonton with teachers from across the country to learn and discuss the realities of AI on Christian Education. On Friday we look forward to welcoming guests into our classroom and Hike for Hospice in the afternoon. If you are able to walk with the class Friday afternoon, let us know via the agenda. Have a blessed weekend! CVA MJ

Grade 6B

With the Easter concert behind us Grade 6 settled into a more regular week of work.  Math class had the students finding the area of triangles and working with fractions. The students had the opportunity to read their Language Arts stories to the class. All their stories connected to a short story we studied together, but what a difference each student took with their own – we have a very creative and entertaining group of writers here!  The students are enjoying two novel studies at the moment.  Underground to Canada has opened our eyes to the basic freedoms that we take for granted that are not shared by all (consider never having a bath or getting a full night’s sleep!)  With our novel Lost in the Barrens we have been forming “literary circles” – each member of a group gets a specific literary element to flush out and present to the rest of their group.  We have discussion leaders, summarizers, illustrators, word wizards etc.  Ask your child which task they are working on this week!

Grade 6 is requesting parent volunteers to walk with the students during Hike for Hospice on May 2.  If you are able please email simone.oosterhoff@johncalvinschool.com

Grade 7A

This past week we made preparations to host Anchor and Beacon residents for lunch and activities on Tues. April 29. We also enjoyed our hiking tour of battlegrounds of the War of 1812. Next week will include an open house and another hike. We’ll transition to Bible history and learn about Solomon and the kingdom of peace. We’ll learn about careers and entrepreneurship in math. And in geography we’ll continue working with thematic maps. Enjoy your weekend.

Grade 7B

It was a busy week for grade 7 with many schedule changes and breaks in the routine. We enjoyed a sunny field trip day in Niagara on Wednesday learning more about the war of 1812. Next week, we’re looking forward to beginning a new chapter in history class about the development of Upper Canada. Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend and I’m looking forward to seeing many of you at the Open House next week!

Grade 8

This week was an exciting step towards the end of the year as we chose our grad text, our Ottawa trip T-shirt colour, and our Ottawa trip logo! As we move closer to the end of the year, we keep working our way through our curriculum as well. Next week will prove to be an interesting week for Mrs. Tesfaye and myself, as we head off to Edmonton Wednesday morning for a conference on the use of Artificial Intelligence in our schools. That also means an interesting week for our students as they will have a substitute teacher Wednesday morning/afternoon, Anchor Work Day on Thursday, and Open House and McNally Walk on Friday. Should be an interesting week! Enjoy your weekend! TB/RT
