General News

“Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.” Job 28:28

Just like that, we are into the second half of May. This Victoria Day weekend often feels like the unofficial start of summer. As parks open and trees unfurl their leaves, we can see the faithfulness of our Creator; His infinite wisdom and power are also wonderfully displayed in creation, as evidenced by this morning’s majestic thunderstorm.

We have a couple of birthdays on the calendar. Mrs. Rozema and Mrs. Stel will celebrate their birthdays on Monday, May 19th. We give thanks for the work they do and pray for the LORD’s blessings upon them in the upcoming year.

On Wednesday, May 21st, we will have our final School Spirit Day for the school year. Students are encouraged to dress like teachers, and teachers like students. Get ready for an invasion of mini-teachers!

We also hope to host a Guido Band performance on Thursday, May 22nd. It is scheduled to start at 10:40 AM, just after our morning recess. We warmly welcome you all to this performance.

The annual Baseball tournament will be held in Dorchester, near London, again this year. It will be on Saturday, May 24th.  Thanks are extended to the coaches Mrs. Van Dam, Mrs. Muis, Mrs. Schulenberg, Mrs. Devries, & Mrs. Reinink for the girls, and Mr. Nobel and Mr. Mans for the boys, for preparing the Defenders team for the tournament.

I believe that is all for this week. May God bless us in the upcoming week!

Classroom News

Kindergarten

It was a good week of learning in Kindergarten.  We really enjoyed the warm weather this week and were able to spend some extra time outside.  Next week we will be hearing Bible stories about Jesus feeding the five thousand people and the good Samaritan.  Now that we know all our letters, we have been working on a reading and writing sentence activity; the kids have fun putting silly words together along with pictures.  On Wednesday is a school spirit day! Students dress like a teacher and the teachers will be dressed like students, we can’t wait to see all the different teachers in the classroom.  Please continue to check your child’s agenda bag, they would love to show you all their school work and colouring pictures.  Enjoy your long weekend! Have a blessed Sunday.  DV/MV

Grade 1

We concluded our church history unit exploring how God uses weak, and sinful people from all times and places to gather His Church. In the coming weeks, our focus will shift to God’s Word, where we will learn about how God blesses and disciplines His covenant people. In our language lessons, we are paying special attention to recognizing past, present, and future tenses. We have also been exploring how to determine whether a word has one, two, or even three syllables. Ask your child to show you what they have learned! In math, we wrapped up our unit on adding and subtracting larger numbers, which ended with a test. We are now diving into a new unit focused on graphs and maps. In our physical education classes, we are staying active by practicing dribbling skills and preparing for the upcoming Field Day. Yes, we are still working hard in Grade 1, learning new things each day. We are looking forward to seeing many children dressed up as teachers and teachers as students next Wednesday. Wishing you a wonderful, restful long weekend!

Grade 2

Good afternoon! We are so thankful for the beautiful sunshine we could have this week! Grade 2 has continued learning about habitats in Science, and how animals adapt, and how God has thought of everything when creating animals. Next week Tuesday we will be sending an email home to let you know which chaperones have been picked for Ripley’s Aquarium! In Bible we continue to study the stories of Paul and his missionary journeys.  Have a great long weekend! MB & BV

Grade 3

We hope you enjoy your long weekend and that students come back to school on Tuesday, refreshed and ready to begin again. Grade 3A hopes to visit Anchor Home on Wednesday afternoon. Both classes will be starting a new Church History unit on the life of Athanasius, bishop of Alexandria. We continue to work on long division in math. It is tricky, but with lots of practice, it’s beginning to get a little easier. Practicing division facts or one – two long division problems at home during the week would really be helpful. The weekly spelling words can be found in the agendas and these should be practiced at home, too.

Memory Work: Hymn 77: 1, 2; Psalm 24: 1-3 (2 week text)

* Don’t forget your library books on Thursday

Grade 4

Grade 4 had a fun week learning all about fractions in Math, continuing in our novel study of Charlotte’s Web, and creating some beautiful art. It’s amazing to think how quickly the end of the year seems to be creeping up on us.

Grade 4A will have a Bible test on Tuesday. Review sheets have been sent home. Both classes will be presenting their weather forecasts on Thursday. Duotangs have been sent home so that students can practice. Parents, you are allowed to help, especially with pronunciation. Red duotangs MUST be returned by Thursday in order to do your presentation. We look forward to our field trip on Friday to the Medieval Faire in Ancaster. Chaperones have been chosen and notified. If your child wishes to dress up in their costume, they are welcome to do so. Please keep in mind the weather! We are aiming to be back in time for the buses.  Grade 4A has a recorder assessment testing song #14 on May 30. Please ensure your child is practicing at home in preparation for this, and that their recorder makes it back to school by the 30th. Same goes for Grade 4B, but they are learning song #21.

Grade 4B will be celebrating Mrs. Stel’s birthday on Tuesday afternoon! Wednesday is a school spirit day – the students will be dressing up as teachers!!

Grade 6A

On Tuesday the students enjoyed their trip to Crawford Lake. In the morning, they toured 3 longhouses which were reconstructed from the 15th century Iroquoian village. They particularly enjoyed feeling the furs and antlers, seeing the grinding stone, looking at all the tools they used, seeing a fire being made, the mural wall, and playing lacrosse. After a picnic lunch they walked around the meromictic Crawford Lake looking for a variety of items to check off their list, such as an empty snail shell and a beehive. Thanks to Mrs. Oosterhoff, Mrs. VanEgmond and Mrs. Baartman for coming along with us and for Mrs. Stieva for driving the bus. Check out the pictures on Instagram courtesy of Mrs. Oosterhoff. Have a blessed long weekend, CVA MJ

Grade 6B

I’m sure the highlight of the student’s week was our trip to Crawford Lake.  Though the forecast looked quite wet, the Lord blessed us with a beautiful day to spend learning about longhouses and the indigenous people who used to live there. Seeing, in real life, the things we are learning in our Social Studies unit does make it more real for the students.   The hike(s) around the lake in the afternoon was also thoroughly enjoyed.  In our Bible classes we have been studying the 10 plagues and the Passover. While we are in the midst of our literary circles in Lost in the Barrens, we are hoping to wrap up our Novel Study on Underground to Canada next week.  It has been an eye-opening time for the students as they read about, and we discuss, what life must have been like as a slave. In our computers class we are honing our computer skills by researching, making a presentation and designing slides to present to the class about an immune system disease. Have a wonderful long weekend and a blessed Sunday. SO/EV

Memory Work: Ps 118:1

Devotions: Tu. Sam, W. Joey, Th. Nadia, Fr. Seth

Tests: Church History Test on Tuesday

Grade 7A

With a healthy dose of recent vitamin “D” we carried on with the work the Lord set before us in Gr. 7A. We compared the evaporation rate of various substances in science and will turn to thermal energy transfer systems next week. After considering the role of Christians and the environment, we move on to our use of natural resources in geography, followed by an examination of the effect of tourists on Antarctica. While we saw how the rule of King Solomon foreshadowed the Lord Jesus’ kingdom of peace we will transfer into Church History, returning to the spread of the Reformation; this time in France and Geneva through a timid man named Jean Cauvin. Track and field practice continues with a focus on long jump and triple jump. Enjoy your long weekend.

Grade 7B

Grade 7 enjoyed another busy, productive week. The students completed the unit on Financial Literacy in math and have begun learning about measurement and conversion. In language arts, the students completed the final chapter about grammar rules (some more thankful for this than others;)) and have dove into the exciting world of J.R.R Tolkien’s “The Hobbit”. Next week we will begin to study John Calvin and the history of our Belgic Confession. Wishing everyone a relaxing May long weekend!

Grade 8

As I write this, I’m looking at my sideboard and reading that there are only 24 days until Ottawa! Where has the year gone?

As we head into the long weekend, we look forward to enjoying the beautiful weather the LORD has given us. Next week, we will continue working through our regular classwork. We are beginning a new unit on Paul’s missionary journeys, exploring how the LORD used Paul to grow His Church.

In math, we are working through linear inequalities and learning how to graph them. In Phys. Ed., we have begun training for track and field, which will take place on June 6.

On May 30, we have our biannual field trip to the ROM with Grades 7 and 8. If you would like to be a chaperone, please let me know by the end of the coming week.

Enjoy your long weekend!
