General News

“Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.” Job 28:28

Next week brings with it a turning of the page in the calendar, as we enter the last month of the school year! The final weeks bring lots of activity with them, as is evident in this lengthy General News section.

All the money raised for McNally House has come in and been totaled. Altogether, the students raised $21,488! We are thankful that we can support this organization, which supports so many individuals and their families. May God continue to make them a blessing to many.

Congratulations to the boys’ baseball team, who took home the trophy after Saturday’s tournament! The girls also played very well, winning 2 of their 3 games! The Lord has certainly blessed our students with a lot of talent!

We got to welcome next year’s Kindergarteners into the school this week! We look forward to officially welcoming them into our school as students and seeing them regularly in September.

Mrs. Oosterhoff led us in an assembly yesterday, where she told the story of Jesus’ ascension into heaven and how the disciples obeyed His command to wait in Jerusalem until the Holy Spirit came to dwell among the believers. Praise God that Christ advocates for us before the Father and is a sure pledge for us that we will also go to be with Him in heaven (HC, LD 18)!

Please note Friday, June 13 in your calendars as our Local Play Day. We look forward to a day filled with games/sports, teamwork, and fun, DV! More information will be coming in next week’s Chronicle.

This year’s year-end trips are scheduled for Tuesday, June 17. Students in Grades K-3 will be heading to Safari Niagara ($14.95), while students in Grades 4-6 will enjoy a day at Wet’n’Wild ($30.50). To help us organize chaperones in time, we ask that all chaperone requests be submitted to the office by June 6. Please do not send the requests to the teachers. Please indicate which grade or child you would like to accompany. Chaperones will be responsible for paying their own entrance fees. There is no fee for students this year. Thank you for your cooperation and support in helping make these trips a memorable experience for our students!

On the topic of the trips, please note that students are required to wear their JCCS T-shirts or a royal blue shirt. If you don’t have one, please contact the office. Chaperones will be required to wear these T-shirts as well. We have these at the office. Please ensure that your swimwear is modest. We hope to leave the school at 8:15 and return to the school at 4:00. A message will go out to families when the buses arrive so that you can pick up your children to bring them home.

Monday will be a PD Day. Staff will be busy at school, getting ready for the year end report cards, among other things. Enjoy the long weekend, students (and parents)!

Miss Aalbers and Mr. Jongsma will both be celebrating another birthday this week, Miss Aalbers on Wednesday, and Mr. Jongsma on Friday! We are very thankful for all that they do here at JCCS. We pray that they will have enjoyable birthdays and that God will continue to bless and guide them in the coming year.

This week will be the last week to take out library books. We are thankful for our well-stocked library and the librarians who volunteered their time this year so we could read many books!

Lastly, after a whirlwind of a month, Mr. Van Iperen will finish his final course for his Master of Education degree on Wednesday. Congratulate him if you see him! We pray that the Lord will give him all that he needs to finish up the final assignments for it in the next few days, and that his studies will be beneficial, both for him and for JCCS.

I believe that is all for this week. May God bless us in the upcoming week!

Kindergarten

It was a shorter week in Kindergarten, on Wednesday we welcomed the new kindergarten students to JCCS.  It was a great day for students and teachers to get to know each other and the highlight was the bus ride through Smithville.  We are looking forward to our Happy Rolphs and Splashpad trip on Wednesday! Let us know if you can join us on the trip; the more the merrier 🙂 Wednesday will also be our last time to check out library books.  In Language Arts we were introduced to a new reader about Kit; it amazes us to see how far the children have come in their reading skills.  KB had fun celebrating Mrs. Vis’ birthday and enjoyed a yummy treat.  Please check your June calendars, there are a few school day changes due to field day and year end trip.  Have a great weekend. DV/MV

Grade 1

It’s been a week full of learning in Grade 1! In Bible, we learned about the exile of the ten tribes of Israel and the land of Judah, which happened because the people turned away from the LORD. We also heard the story of Jonah, whom God sent to warn the people of Nineveh about their coming destruction. We wrapped up our Bible unit with a test to review what we’ve learned. In science, the students are enjoying our unit on energy in our lives—exploring where energy comes from and how we use it every day. In our reading program, we’re reading more about God’s amazing creatures. The children are learning how to use adjectives to describe animals, expanding both their vocabulary and their writing skills. In art, we were introduced to the life and work of Vincent Van Gogh. Ask your child what they’ve learned. Have a wonderful weekend and blessed Sunday.

Grade 2

Grade 2 has had a very exciting week! Our trip to Ripley’s Aquarium on Tuesday was enjoyed by all. It was neat to experience and hear the students talk about these amazing animals and their habitats. We also really enjoyed taking the GO train! Thank you so much to our bus driver and parent volunteers for joining us on this trip. We are also having fun with our Grade 2, twenty-day countdown! Ask your child what happens each day! In Bible, we are finishing up with Paul and his missionary journeys and plan to do a study on Ephesians for the rest of the year. Have a great weekend and a blessed Sunday! MB & BV

Grade 3

We end this week with many ‘thank you’s’: Thank you Caiden Gansekoele for coming in to do a presentation about plants and soils. We appreciate you teaching our classes about different types of soils. Thank you to Linwell Gardens who donated flowers to end this presentation. Thank you also to Mrs. Breukelman for coming in to read to 3A and helping plant sunflower seeds. We are thankful to God for the many blessings this past week.

Looking into next week, there will be a church history test on the work of Athanasius and the Nicene Creed. Be sure to keep an eye on the agendas for this date.

Memory Work: no song; Psalm 24: 4-6 (two weeks)

Check agenda for spelling words.

Next week, students get to start the week off with a PD day! Grade 4A will have a science test on Tuesday and a Bible test on Wednesday. In French, we are putting together booklets on our families and should have them completed by the end of the year. In Math we will be working with mean, median, mode, and range. In Phys. Ed we continue preparations for the upcoming ‘Play Day’. In Social studies we have wrapped up our study of the Eastern Woodlands First Nations. Have a blessed weekend, CVA MJ

Grade 6B

This Thursday our class was privileged to host the Ascension/Pentecost assembly.  It was good to sing beautiful hymns and reflect on how Jesus Christ our Saviour went up to heaven where he sits as our advocate.  As children of God, we receive the Holy Spirit and may use the boldness, kindness and love He gives to spread the good news of salvation.  To God be all praise!  As May draws to a close, so do many of our units of study.  This week we completed a lot of testing throughout the subjects.  We also came to the end of our Underground to Canada novel study.  Next week will be a shorter week where we look forward to Lego Literacy, an interesting way to put our creative writing skills to work.  We also will continue to develop our discussion skills through our literary circle groups.  Enjoy your weekend!

While at the time of writing we have not yet gone on our trip to the Royal Ontario Museum, we trust that the excursion went well and was enjoyed by all. Next week Friday will see grade seven at the track and field tournament in Hamilton. In between these two events we will continue reading from our novel, “There and Back Again”, work with discounts and taxes, measure our ecological footprints, and investigate the Rebellion of 1837. Enjoy your long weekend.

Grade 7B

This week was a busy one for grade 7. Some highlights include: practicing for Track and Field for an afternoon, continuing the Hobbit, and a field trip to the ROM. The students have continued to learn about our school’s namesake in church history, specifically the changes he made which we still see in our churches today! Next Tuesday the students will have a French quiz about faire expressions and will then learn to write a proper weather forecast in French. Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend!
