“Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” Eph 6:11
After what seemed like an extended summer, the cooler, crisp air of fall has finally descended upon our region! We’re enjoying that beautiful autumn sunshine as we head into the Thanksgiving weekend, what an immense blessing! Almost synonymous with Thanksgiving are the cross-country runs, and this year we’ve had them back-to-back. We congratulate our teams on their efforts, and extend a sincere thank you to Mrs. Schulenberg and Mrs. Aalbers for coordinating these events.
Please note that this edition of the Chronicle will cover a two-week period to accommodate Thanksgiving and the upcoming professional development days. On Tuesday of this coming week, our staff will participate in sessions focused on French, Art, and Church History. The following week, on Thursday and Friday, the team will attend the Compass Reformed Educators Conference (CREC). We are especially looking forward to this year’s conference, which will be hosted at Guido de Brès Christian High School. These PD opportunities are invaluable for deepening our Reformed perspective on curriculum and continually improving our teaching practices.
The excitement is building for Fall Fest! Join us on Saturday, October 18, for our biggest community event of the season. It’s a fantastic opportunity to gather in fellowship, give thanks for God’s provision, and raise funds to help our school flourish. Thanks to our amazing volunteers, the gift baskets and auction items are already pouring in! Don’t miss this wonderful day of community and celebration. We can’t wait to see you there!
On October 19, Mrs. Tesfaye will celebrate her birthday. As it falls on a Sunday, she’ll get to spend it with some of her favourite people. We’ll make sure she also receives the warm JCCS birthday welcome!
That’s all for now. Wishing you all a wonderful Thanksgiving as we reflect on the many provisions and blessings God has given us.

Kindergarten
We have been busy learning a lot of new things in Kindergarten. The children are having fun building and extending patterns in math. We have been working on forming a lot of different lines and got a little messy with shaving cream for one of our activities! Wednesday, we enjoyed a tasty hotdog lunch. Thank you to the Ladies Auxiliary for providing this for us. During science, we have begun some investigations with our 5 senses. This week, we did a smell test and next week we will be doing a taste test. Please note the upcoming PD days, there will be no school on Oct 13, 14 as well as Oct 23, 24. A reminder we will be going to Bry-Anne Farm on Oct 22, please let us know if you would like to join us! We hope you all enjoy your Thanksgiving weekend and look forward to seeing you back on Wednesday. MV/DV
Grade 1
It’s been a wonderful week in Grade 1! We learned about Jacob wrestling with God and his return to the land of Canaan. Next week, we’ll begin to hear the exciting story of Jacob’s son, Joseph. We will certainly see how God uses people to fulfill His plans.
In math, we’ve started focusing on skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s, and the students are enjoying practicing these new patterns together. In science, they’ve been learning to observe and describe the differences between living and non-living things—ask your child to tell you what they’ve discovered! Please continue to work on reading those tricky words. We’ve sent home a little pouch to keep the rings safe and secure! Everyone is looking forward to Thanksgiving adventures this weekend. We hope you enjoy a time of rest and celebration with your families.
Grade 2
Even though this week was a warm one, we feel the cooler air moving in. Grade 2 enjoyed starting a new reader in Language Arts, and are looking forward to reading some new bedtime tales! In Math we continued with adding and subtracting, looking specifically at fact families. We are coming close to the end of our first Science unit. This week we learned about buoyancy and absorbency. In Art we explored and learned about Andy Warhol, and the style of art that he is known for. Thanks for sending in the soup cans, you will soon get to see the hard work that your child has put into this lesson. There is a buzz in the air as everyone seems to be looking forward to some extra time with family for this Thanksgiving weekend. Hope you have a restful long weekend!
Grade 3
“Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: give thanks unto him, and bless his name” Psalm 100:4. We are thankful for the Lord’s blessings so far this school year: they are plenty. We give thanks for Rev. Dethan’s presentation to the school and especially to our class. We give thanks that the Lord has kept us safe through our travels to and from school each day. We are thankful for our classmates and friends here at school. Indeed, there are so many reasons to give thanks. After Thanksgiving weekend we look ahead to two short weeks. We will kick off our new Bible unit on the patriarchs with the calling of Abram to his special task from the Lord to be a father of a nation. In math, we are working on addition facts. Keep practicing at home!
See agenda for spelling words.
Memory Work: Psalm 8: 4,5 and Genesis 3: 15 (due Oct. 17), Hymn 52: 1 (due Oct. 22)
Grade 4
Happy Thanksgiving! We wish you and your families a wonderful weekend reflecting on the Lord’s faithfulness to us. We pray it is a restful time, and can’t wait for a full, short week next week. This week we were blessed with a wonderful field trip to Rock Point. Thank you to all our volunteers for your help! Next week we will be finishing up our unit on rocks and minerals in Science and will move into our first unit for Social Studies learning about our vast and beautiful country – Canada! In Music we have started to learn how to play the recorder. Some students have asked to practice these at home. Sorry, in advance. In Language Arts we are beginning a new unit titled ‘Brown Girl Dreaming’. We will be learning about our own identity and values throughout this unit. Lastly, thank you for all the items for the food drive, it was great to see so much participation and willingness to share with others.
That’s all for now – enjoy your weekend.
Let’s go Blue Jays!

Grade 6
Another fun and exciting week has passed in Grade 6. The fun and excitement continues over the next few weeks with lots of different types of learning happening. After a beautiful-looking Thanksgiving weekend, we will enjoy a P.D. day on Tuesday. Grade 6 will only have a couple of days in the classroom the rest of the week, as we will adventure out to Latitude Air Ambulance for a Field trip on Oct. 17th in connection with our Flight unit in Science. That same week, we will be preparing our classrooms for Fall Fest, which will be held on Oct. 18th – we hope to see you there! The following week will also be a short week as the staff of JCCS will be attending the Compass Reformed Educators Convention on Oct. 23rd and 24th at Guido. As the teachers become students for a couple of days, the students will enjoy a few days of rest. We hope and pray that this Thanksgiving weekend is a blessing to all, and that the coming weeks ahead will be full of godly encouragement and rejuvenation for parents, teachers, and students alike. Enjoy your extended long weekend! – BK, MJ, CVA
Grade 7A
We’ll move into our next chapter in science and learn more about forces and failure, balance and centre of gravity, and the principles of stability. Geography will have us exploring and discussing how landforms are created and changed as well as our response to challenges caused by earth’s forces. Our study of landforms takes place under the lens that God the Father created all things out of nothing and continues to uphold and govern them. In History, we’ll learn how the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) were formed in order to combat Calvinism and how the R.C.C. attempted to beat the Protestants to the New World and how the French Crown made a tidy profit on the side by trading in furs. Enjoy your long weekend.
Grade 7B
We have begun to study King David and will spend several lessons on these Bible stories. In math class, we are reviewing adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. This concept will continue, and we will make the connection to working with decimal numbers in the coming weeks. Grade 7 has learned about the early days of the fur trade, and is currently writing about the accomplishments of Cartier and Champlain. Presentations of Champlain’s eulogy will begin on the 16th and carry into the following week on Monday and Wednesday. Students should be giving thought to what prop to use to support their speech. Have a great Thanksgiving weekend! RK
Grade 8
Congratulations to our Cross Country teams for their participation in the Golden Horseshoe and Dundas Valley meets! The LORD blessed us with beautiful weather for both events, and for that we are truly thankful. The next couple of weeks will be short ones — this weekend we enjoy the Thanksgiving long weekend, and the following week will include the Teacher’s Convention. Hopefully students (and parents!) are okay with a few three-day learning weeks. Next week looks like a return to our regular schedule, so there’s nothing special to report there. We wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend filled with gratitude and reflection on the many blessings the LORD has given us. RT/TB
