General News

“Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” Eph 6:11

This week culminated in several staff versus student indoor soccer games. The matches were well-played, with the staff working hard to maintain their winning track record. Congratulations to all the teams, and a special thank you to Mr. Breukelman, Mr. Witten, and Mr. Joosse for their efforts in coordinating the intramural program.

Looking ahead, we have two Professional Development (PD) days to start the week. Our staff will focus on the Art and French curricula, as well as finalizing report cards, which will be sent home on February 6th. Report cards are an excellent opportunity to highlight areas of growth, celebrate achievements in various subjects, and look back with thankfulness at the talents and skills developed over the past term. We look forward to our continued partnership with you as we assist in the education of covenant children.

To conclude the week, we are excited to host both a School Spirit Day and an Early Years Morning on Friday. The spirit day theme is Pajama Day, while our Early Years Morning will feature a teddy bear theme. We look forward to this delightful end to the week.

Wishing you a blessed weekend.

Kindergarten

It was a cold and snowy week but the kindergarten class enjoyed sledding on Mount Calvin on Wednesday. It was an exciting Wednesday with a visit to Miss Bee’s class for some singing, it’s always a fun time! We have started a new unit on 3D shapes in Math. The children have had fun exploring different shapes in our classroom. Next week, we have our last skating on Wednesday at 12:15, it’s been great to see how much everyone has improved! A reminder, next week Monday and Tuesday are PD days. It looks like more snow is headed our way, hopefully the children can enjoy building snowmen and forts on their days off. Friday, January 30 is PJ day, don’t forget to bring a stuffy with! Have a lovely weekend and a blessed Sunday. MV/DV

Grade 1

Even though it has been quite cold, the snow piles at school have made recess time a highlight of the day! Students have been bundling up and making the most of the winter weather with plenty of active play and fresh air. It has been wonderful to see so much joy, movement, and creativity outdoors.

In Bible, we have completed our unit on the Israelite people entering the Promised Land. Our focus has now shifted to the time of the judges, as we continue to see how the Lord faithfully guided His people and called them to trust and obey Him during challenging times.

January is often a season of big strides in reading, and we are seeing that excitement in the classroom! Students are growing in confidence and enjoying following along in their Books of Praise as we sing together. To really capitalize on this stage of growth, we encourage you to practice the assigned tricky words extra vigilantly at home. You can find the 5 words in their agenda. The goal is for students to read these words automatically, without sounding them out. A fun challenge is to have your child read the words to siblings—or even to grandparents! Thank you for your continued support at home.

Grade 2

This week, Grade 2 enjoyed the short/snow day on Monday! We heard lots of stories the next day of all the fun things they did and made in the snow. They also had the bonus of being on the snow hill for a PE as well as a recess! So fun! The students are liking this Social Studies unit on Nunavut. They loved learning about animals, and watching videos and seeing pictures of what life is like in the Arctic. Our next unit in Math is on 2-digit addition and subtraction. It will be very helpful for the students to know their single-digit facts. Please help them with this. After the two PD days, next week, we look forward to another dress-up day. Looking forward to a day spent in our pajamas! Have a great, extra-long weekend!

Grade 3

Snow, snow, snow!   He gives snow like wool; He scatters frost like ashes. Psalm 147:16 We thank the LORD for protecting us day by day. Math is all about dividends, divisors, and quotients.  Ask your child to define these words.   We are hearing Bible stories about Joseph.  God brings Joseph to Egypt so that He may be the leader of His people.   Just a reminder that students bring in their library book in THEIR library bags.  Thank you.

Psalm 95:1

Text:  Exodus 20: 7-11

Please check your child’s agenda for the spelling words.

Don’t forget to practice them every day, grade three!

Grade 4

Our week started a little differently than anticipated with the students being sent home early due to the weather and then on Wednesday with the train delay. We are so thankful to the transportation committee for all the work they do making the difficult decisions when the weather isn’t the greatest. We also are so thankful to our bus drivers who work tirelessly bringing us safely to and from school everyday. But most importantly we thank our heavenly Father for his care and protection. Grade 4B welcomed Miss  VanVliet who will be a student teacher in their class for 7 weeks. Grade 4 also was able to go skating this week! The skills of the students are progressing with each time they go skating. Both Grade 4 classes are wrapping up the first half of the Bible unit on the kings of Israel with tests being written by both classes.  Multiplication is still our focus in math with students learning how to multiply two digit by three digit numbers. Praying that you have an enjoyable extra-long weekend. FR/JB

Grade 5

We had a great time on our field trip to the Hamilton Museum of Steam & Technology yesterday! It was connected to our last science unit called “Properties of and Changes in Matter”. Students got to do some hands-on science experiments, and observe the power of steam in action, and, as they did so, they were able to identify the different properties of solids, liquids, and gases, and explore the changing states of matter. Both classes will be reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe next week as our next novel study. Thank you to Mrs. Alicia Bratcher for transforming part of our hallway to look like Narnia! We look forward to pajama day on Friday next week!
Devotions for next week are: for 5A – JP (W), Eden (Th), Jackson (F), and for 5B – Brynlee (W), Quinn (Th), and Landon (F).
Enjoy the long weekend! CDV/KV

Grade 6

The students enjoyed their turn on Mt. Calvin, especially with the additional snow. We are starting another novel study next week, namely, Underground to Canada. In French the students are learning the French names for various items in the classroom, the numbers 70-100, prepositions, and some more verbs. In science we covered the different types of circuits and even experimented with building our own series and parallel circuits. Next Thursday afternoon we hope to hold our ‘in-class’ Geography Challenge. Have a blessed weekend! CVA BK MJ

Grade 7A

Several things were of note this past week. The “in class” Geography Challenge was held in preparation for the school final on Feb. 12. The PSPD work continued with the speech writers completing their speeches and the poetry reciters continuing with their memorization. In Bible history we learned that the Saints may fall into serious sins and that these sins are forgiven, yet we still live with the results and consequences of our actions as illustrated by the terrible troubles in David’s family. Enjoy your weekend.

Grade 7B

After the extended weekend, students will begin to present their speeches or poems to other grades. By doing this, they will gain valuable experience and gain confidence. They should spend some time this weekend preparing themselves and committing it to memory. Our math lessons are somewhat challenging for students as we learn about inequalities and sets of numbers that make inequalities true. We will continue to work through this topic for the week. Students can expect a History quiz on Thursday. Enjoy your week! RK

Grade 8

A busy week, including several tests, an engaging science contest, the Great Canadian Geography Challenge, and an informative visit from Mr. Tomlin, comes to an end as we look forward to a four-day weekend.

Next Wednesday, we are looking forward to skating. A reminder to students who play hockey to please bring a helmet. The remainder of the week will follow our regular programming.

Enjoy your extended weekend!
