General News

“Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” Eph. 6:11

Although March Break was just last week it seems like it was a long time ago already.  We had a busy, but productive week.  As I type up this Chronicle we have a Basketball Tournament happening at Guido, the cheery sounds of the Early Years Morning are greeting my ears,  the grade one class is gearing up to head out to Agape Valley, under beautifully sunny skies this time, rather than the rain which canceled the anticipated trip last time.  This all after a busy day for grade 4 yesterday, with their Medieval Day!   What a blessing to be able to jump right back in and bask in the learning that will shape the last 12 weeks of the year.

We are in the middle of the West Lincoln Community Care Food Drive.   We look forward to your help in ensuring that the barrels that are placed throughout the school are full so that we can support those in need.

On Thursday morning we hope to have an Easter Assembly.  This will be held at 10:30 in the gymnasium.  You are all cordially invited.

The grade 7 class said farewell to Miss Ravensbergen today.  We wish her much success as she finishes up her studies at CCRTC and prepares for her role as grade 5 teacher at ACRES.

Finally, we are still finalizing the full staff lineup for next year, but we are pleased to announce that Mrs. Rachel Vis will be joining the JCCS team. She will serve as an office administrator alongside Mrs. Amanda Rozema. Throughout the week, you will be greeted by Mrs. Rozema for three days and Mrs. Vis for two days. As we welcome our newest member, we also want to share that Mrs. D’Addazio will be retiring from her role at the end of the year. We are deeply grateful for her able, tireless, and dedicated work in the office over the years, and we wish her many blessings as she begins this new stage of her life.

I believe that is all for this week.

Classroom News

Kindergarten

We were happy to be back at school after the break even though it was a short week. Great job to all the students completing their Spring break challenge booklets, we were happy to look through them together! This week, we continued to explore simple subtraction in math. There are only a few more letters left to learn and then we will have finished the whole alphabet. The children are showing good recall of their letters and letter sounds which is helping them read more and more words. We learned about Hannah’s prayer for a baby in Bible and will hear about Samuel next week. There will be an Easter assembly next Thursday at 10:30 and a reminder there is no school on Good Friday. Please consider sending in an item for our Spring food drive if you are able. We hope you have a wonderful weekend! MV/DV

Grade 1

We are thankful that our long-awaited sugar bush trip to Agape could finally take place today. Both students and teachers thoroughly enjoyed the presentations, as well as the delicious tasting at the end!

In Bible, we learned about the death of Saul and his sons in battle. We also learned how David became king; waiting patiently on God’s timing for His promises to be fulfilled.

In math, we began our new unit on fractions. Students are learning about parts and wholes and have started exploring the concept of halves.

In science, we launched our unit on “Everyday Objects, Materials, and Structures.” The students have been actively engaged in exploring various classroom objects and observing what materials they are made from.

Have a blessed weekend!

Grade 2

So good to be back together learning at school! In Church history this week we finished up our stories learning about Pelagius and Augustine, and their work for or against God’s Word. We look forward to retelling/hearing the Easter stories next week. In Math we are finishing off working with adding double digits, and head towards working with double digit subtraction and regrouping. Please continue to practice math facts at home with your child. Grade 2 is getting close to finishing their unit and lessons about Zimbabwe.  Have a great weekend.

Grade 3

Welcome back! It’s been a busy full week of school! Lots of excited students with many stories to tell! In our Bible classes we are hearing the stories of the ten plagues.  God demonstrates His power to the Egyptians and the Israelites. Ask us what a structure is and to name some as well. We are busy learning the concert songs for our program in May. Ask us to sing some of them.  A nice preview before the concert! 🙂 That’s it for now. Have a blessed weekend.

Psalm 124:1

Text:  Psalm 23:1-3

Please check your child’s agenda for the spelling words. Take the time to review them too, grade three!

Grade 4

Hear ye, hear ye! The king, queen, knights, monks, lords, ladies, and many others gathered at Castle Calvin on Thursday for a delightful Medieval Day! Great merriment was shared by all as we enjoyed games, crafts, and activities inspired by medieval times. Of course, the feast was a special highlight—one we are sure will be remembered for a long time. Thank you to all the parents who volunteered by making decorations, setting up, cleaning up, or serving. A special thank you goes to Mrs. Bratcher for her extra work creating costumes, which will be available to rent from the school in the coming years. We also thank Mrs. A. Tenhage for teaching Grade 4B today while Mrs. Reinink attended the basketball tournament as the girls’ coach. Go Defenders Go! Looking ahead, we are excited to dive into the world of machines and mechanisms. Students will explore pulleys, gears, and forces, and the effects they have on simple machines. Last fall, we held a food drive and collected over 750 items. While our minds may now be more focused on the signs of spring, we would love to fill our donation buckets again with non-perishable items. Please consider contributing! Lastly, in Math, we are working on division. This can be a challenging concept, as it requires thinking in reverse from multiplication. Please support your child with any homework in the coming weeks as we learn division patterns and strategies. Have a blessed weekend, everyone

Grade 5

We hope you all had a restful and enjoyable March Break! We’ve gotten right back into the swing of things here at school. 5A has moved their first quiz for Ancient Egypt to Tuesday. 5B might have one on Thursday, but keep an eye on the agenda to find out for sure. 5B will be having a Chapter 6 math test on Thursday. The students have been working hard over the last few weeks to build gymnastics routines in our Phys. Ed. classes, and they will be presenting those next week. We have been devoting a lot of time to working on our dioramas for The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and they are coming along nicely! Grade 5 has been organizing the spring food drive, and the students have gotten to hand out the memes they made to promote the food drive. Keep bringing items in to help out those in need!
Devotions for next week are as follows: for 5A – Avalon (M), Levi (Tu), John Paul (W), Eden (Th), and for 5B – Brynlee (M), Quinn (Tu), Landon (W), Gabriel (Th).
Have a wonderful weekend! CDV/KV

Grade 6A

We made a good start to our subjects after our enjoyable break. In Language Arts we were challenged to find heteronyms. Ask your child what they are and if they found some. For Math the students changed decimals into fractions and were challenged to also put them into lowest terms. Most of the class presented their slides from their disease research which gave us some knowledge about various diseases. We have now also transitioned from Church History back to Bible History, beginning with the account of Joseph. Have a blessed weekend, CVA MJ

Grade 6B

Bible/Church History: Our study of the early Church has led us to a defining moment – the Crusades!

Math: We’ve spent plenty of time learning how to work with fractions – adding and subtracting, renaming, and estimating!

L.A.: The end of Underground to Canada looms near, with many guesses as to how the novel will wrap up.  We’ll also have the chance to put our own spin on things!

French: Students have described their family’s favourite activities in French, and we will be starting to look at our favourite foods in the next number of classes!

Science/Social Studies: Posters describing the different geo-political regions of the U.S.A. will soon be popping up on our walls here in gr. 6B!

Phys. Ed.: We’ve seen some lively games of “bump” in our phys. ed. classes lately as the students develop their basketball shooting skills.

Please remember to send along some items for the West Lincoln Community Care Food Drive.  We will also have an Easter assembly on Thursday – we would love to see you there!  Enjoy your weekend!

Grade 7A

This past week we bid adieu to Ms. Ravensbergen who returned to her studies at the CCRTC after spending a month with us. In history we said hello and were introduced to two important characters of our province’s past; the eccentric Thomas Talbot and the forward thinking John Graves Simcoe. We’ll probably get to our next math unit on probability as we learn more about independent and dependent events and simulations. We transitioned from church history to bible history with a unit about King Solomon and the kingdom of peace. We’ll learn how God’s promises come true and how this reign and kingdom foreshadows the Great Kingdom. Enjoy your weekend.

Grade 7B

After a Church history unit, we have returned to Bible history lessons. The current unit will focus on Solomon and his temple building work. We are making headway in the math lessons about probability, and will continue with this topic for approximately 2 more weeks. In history class, students are enjoying the reading of The Bully Boys, by Eric Walters. They recognize many familiar names and places as we learn about the Loyalists of Upper Canada. Have a great week! RK
