General News

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,… You are serving the Lord Christ.  Colossians 3:23, 24b

We have entered into the month of December.  We continue to work heartily during these weeks of advent as we commemorate the humble birth of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.   It is through his humility that our sins have been forgiven.  The story of Christmas tends to be romantacized in the world that we live in, but being born in a barn is far from the comfortable lives that we live.  Jesus humbled himself that God might be exalted.  This gives all the more reason for us to live lives that serve him.

This week Miss B began a medical leave for her health.  We pray that this leave will allow for healing and that she will be restored and able to take up her task again at the school.  May God surround her during these times with the hope and promises that are so richly found in the gospel.  I know she will miss her students and colleagues and we pray that in due time we will see her back.   In the meantime, Mrs. VanBrederode has been found willing to cover her classroom.  The plan is that this will be until Christmas.   If you need to reach Mrs. VanBrederode you can reach her by email joanne.vanbrederode@johncalvinschool.com or by calling the school.

The volleyball tournament was held in Hamilton yesterday.  We sent three teams to this tournament.  The boys’ and girls’ teams made it to the semi-finals while the mixed team came in second place.   We are thankful for this opportunity to develop these skills with the students.  We thank the coaches (Mrs. Groen, Mrs. VanBrederode, Mrs. Spoelstra, Mrs. VanAmerongen, and Mr. Breukelman) for their efforts and time put into the coaching of these teams.   We, as staff, also had a wonderful opportunity to enjoy some lunch games with these teams.  It was a joy!

This week Ms. Broersma will be celebrating her birthday on Tuesday.  Congratulations!  We pray that God blesses you in the upcoming year.  I am Ms. Broersma will find time to celebrate with all 39 K students!

Our final Early Years morning will run on Thursday of this week!  It is a pleasure to see the upcoming students and families get acquainted with the school.

I believe that is all for this week.  May God be praised through our worship this weekend! JVI

Kindergarten

Praise God from whom all blessings flow for another week complete in kindergarten. The students are quickly learning their letter sounds and are very excited to share the words that they can read now! This week in Language Arts we will be doing a review of all letter sounds learned as well as a number of assessments to gauge the students’ learning. In math we continue to learn the numbers 0-10. Students did much better this week remembering how to write these numbers independently. Well done, kindergarten! In Bible we learned about the how the Lord blessed Zechariah and Elizabeth with a baby boy, John, who would have an important job from the Lord. The students could not fathom not being able to talk for 9 whole months! Next week we will be learning about the birth of our Lord and Saviour. Here’s a look at next week:

Monday – SH: Naomi

Tuesday – SH: Kara

Wednesday – Library Day

Thursday – SH: Neve

Friday – SH: Samuel V

Have a great weekend everyone! JB/SV

Grade 1

December is already here! As we approach the holidays the cold weather comes with it too. Remember to send your child to school dressed appropriately for the weather as they sometimes come in with freezing hands and red noses. In math, grade 1 is starting our new unit on time and money. We have been learning about how clocks work. Challenge your children to read your clocks if you have any at home! On Wednesday, December 7th, grade 1 gets to go skating! If there are any parents/grandparents who would love to come, please let us know. Have a blessed week.

Grade 2

Wow it’s already December! Just a few more weeks before Christmas break! We’ve been working through our first Church History unit on the Worship Service. We have been learning about the order of the worship service and discussing big words like, the votum, the salutation, and the benediction. This weekend we are sending home a sheet for your child to take with them to church on Sunday. We’re hoping they can fill it out like a checklist so that they think about the different parts of the worship service that we’ve talked about in class. With the wet weather off and on we would appreciate extra socks in your child’s backpack. Thanks! Have a great weekend and a blessed Sunday! RG/BV

Grade 3

This past week we had Mrs. C. Buist from the Dairy Education Program give us a presentation about farming then and now. It was great to learn about the cheese press, butter churn and how automated everything is today on the farm. The children (and their teachers) learned a lot. We are nearing the end of the Bible stories about Isaac and Jacob. A test will soon follow. In math we are focusing on multiplication. Keep practising the two times table boys and girls. We have finished the stories about Aladdin and are moving on to our novel Study “Stone Fox”. This will be another exciting story for the children to follow and learn about. Hopefully, older siblings will keep the story a secret. Scoop ball kept us busy this week in phys.ed. In art we are learning about depth and overlapping.  The children are creating a beautiful winter scene. We welcome Mrs. Joanne VanBrederode to grade 3A while Miss B. is on medical leave. We pray for strength for Miss B. Wishing you a wonderful weekend and blessed Sunday.

Grade 5

Greetings from Grade 5! Both classes enjoyed a dairy presentation this week from Mrs. Buist. Her presentation, entitled “Dairy Goodness”, tied in very well with our Science unit about nutrition. We got to play a game that tested our knowledge of different vitamins and nutrients, and we received some dairy paraphernalia from her after the presentation. We really enjoyed our afternoon of skating on Wednesday! Thank you to the parents that came out and skated with us and helped tie some skates. Grade 5A will be starting the first novel study, Call it Courage, next week! In Bible, we have wrapped up Unit 2, and we are starting Unit 3 next week. In this unit, we will continue learning about Jesus’ ministry, with more of a focus on parables He taught.

Devotions for next week are as follows:

5A – M. Ryan, Tu. Sawyer, W. Sophia, Th. Ashleigh, F. Avery

5B – M. Zion, Tu. Addison, W. John, Th. Claire, F. Eddie

Have a wonderful weekend! RK/KV

Grade 6

It seems as though the illnesses have made their way through the Grade 6 classrooms, as we saw full classrooms towards the end of this week! We hope and pray for more of the same next week! Next week we look forward to our trip to the Warplane Museum! Please make sure that the students have a lunch that does not need to be microwaved. There are no parent volunteers that are needed for this trip. Hope you have a great weekend!

Grade 7

The British have defeated the French in North America; now what will they do with the Francophones? We’ll learn next week about assimilation, the Royal Proclamation and the Quebec Act. We have moved from the design phase of our stir stick bridges in Science to the construction phase. In P.E. we’ll put it all together as we serve, bump, set and return. We’ll move from global climate factors in Geography to local climate factors; perfect for people living in between two great lakes. Enjoy your weekend.

Grade 8

Here is our weekly update for Grade 8. In history we wrapped up our confederation projects with our final two presentations this Friday afternoon. Looking ahead to next week we will consider how the Fathers of Confederation met in conference to build the 72 resolutions which formed the foundation for the beginning of our confederation. In church history we began a new unit on the reformation in England during the 1500s. Next week we hope to discuss the story of William Tyndale, ‘God’s Outlaw’. In LA our novel study of the Adventures of Tom Sawyer continues while students also took the time to practice oral reading children’s stories to several younger grades. Have a blessed weekend! Cheers, AL, RT, and Mr. J.
