General News

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,… You are serving the Lord Christ.  Colossians 3:23, 24b

It has been a warm and busy week here at JCCS.   First of all, we congratulate the JCCS hockey team on picking up some more hardware to hang up at the school.   At this rate we may be looking for more storage.  All kidding aside, we are thankful for the sportsmanship of these young athletes.

The school has been working through a number of activities this week.  We have started working on our pieces for the school concert. This is always an exciting experience and we look forward to this May event.  We also enjoyed Flag Day.   We congratulate the winners of the flag design contest. The winners of the Flag Day contest are: grades 1 & 2 – Landon B., grades 3 & 4 – Lia Rose Haining, grades 5 & 6 – Audrey Schulenberg, grades 7 & 8 – Tanya Schuller.  Congratulations!

I have seen quite a number of presentation boards going back and forth from the grade 7/8 class as they get ready for the Science Fair.   We invite you to come to take a look at these Science Fair Projects in the JCCS gym at 7:30 on Thursday, February 23. We would like to thank Mr. Witten for his efforts in coordinating this event.

We hope to start Book Weeks on Tuesday.   You will see in the calendar below what each day’s event is for the coming week.  Each class is challenged to read a total of 200 hours.  Students will get a Lego brick for every 20 minutes read.  Please do your best to encourage this event at home as well.  We know that this has a huge impact and influence on the literacy development of our students!   Thank you to our team of teachers who have coordinated this event.

On Thursday is Book Character Dress up day.  We encourage this to be about a book and not a movie character.   Students are encouraged to dress up and bring the book that they are dressing up as a character of to school.

This a reminder that we hope to have some guests for next week to read to the students.  If you would like to sign up please email rachel.tesfaye@johncalvinschool.com

I believe that is all for this week.  We wish you all an enjoyable long weekend.   May God richly bless us in the upcoming week!

Kindergarten

What a busy week in kindergarten this past week! We officially welcomed Miss Rachel to our classroom. She is a co-op student from Guido! She will be with us until the end of the year! Two days were dedicated to celebrating Valentine’s Day. We reflected on how we can show love to each other because of the ultimate love that God showed to us with the sacrifice of His Son on the cross! On Wednesday we celebrated Flag Day. It was a sea of red and white in the basement and throughout the school! Next week we will be celebrating our love for reading with I LOVE TO READ Week! Please take a look in the Chronicle for the schedule of what will be happening each day! We have completed our 4th unit of CKLA! The students will be practicing reading with their reading buddies on Wednesday. I’m excited to hear them read with their buddies! We will be learning the last of the letter sounds over the next few weeks. Please continue to practice these sounds with your child at home. In math we continue to explore the concept of addition using a number of manipulatives. Enjoy the extra long weekend! SV/JB

Hello everyone! What a busy and exciting week it has been in grade 1 this week. On Tuesday it was Valentine’s Day, on Wednesday we celebrated flag day as a school, and now today: Thursday we celebrate 100 days of school! As stated above, it has been a very busy week, stuffed with some extra special activities.

This coming week is also a special week: Book Week. Please find the info else where in the chronicle about each day’s DEAR as students may bring in different items during our reading times in the classroom. And don’t forget that on Thursday it is a dress up day. Next week we still hope to learn our memory work and Spelling words, here they are:

Grade 2

What a whirlwind of a week it has been in Grade 2! From handing out Valentine’s cards on Tuesday, participating in Flag Day activities on Wednesday, and working wholeheartedly on our lessons, we’ve had much to do! In our Language Arts classes, we continue to hone our reading and writing skills. Grade 2B learned to write a persuasive letter and managed to convince Mr.VanIperen that they should be given an extra recess (which they enjoyed on Wednesday). Grade 2A will be learning about this kind of writing next week! In our Social Studies classes, we have learned about the people of Zimbabwe, taking a brief look at their culture and language. We even practiced how to say “School is Fun” in the dialects spoken by the Shona and Ndebele tribes.

Thanks to those who sent in some boxes of Kleenex. We’ve received a few boxes, but would certainly appreciate some more. That’s all for this week! Have a blessed long weekend! BV/RG

Grade 3

Hello again, readers. We had a lot of fun on Valentine’s and Flag Day. This past week we could listen to the Bible stories about the Israelites suffering under Pharaoh’s power and Moses who is prepared by God to become Israel’s leader. We are working with money in math class. We have finished Science with a test and hope to turn to the unit about heat and temperature next week. Alice in Wonderland keeps us captivated. We have begun to practise singing for the Ascension Day/Pentecost concert. In phys. ed. class we are learning about basketball.  Continue to practise memory work, times table facts, and spelling words every day. Next week, we hope to have lots of fun again when we have Book week. Thank you organizers!! Wishing you a wonderful, extra long weekend and a blessed Sunday.

On Thursday, 4B will have a French quiz covering all the food items we have learned and the verbs manger, detester and aimer.

Students can bring in a hat on Tuesday, a pillow/blanket on Wednesday, dress up as a book character on Thursday, and bring in their or their parent’s favourite childhood book on Friday. There will also be a reading contest throughout next week and the week after. Lots of reading fun to be had! In the midst of all that, Grade 5A will be having a Science test on their cells unit on Friday. Grade 5B will be having a Chapter 5 Math test on Thursday.

Devotions for next week are as follows:

Grade 6

Another short but busy week has been completed in Grade 6. We look forward to Book Week over the next couple of weeks. Just a reminder that there will be some special days coming up starting with “Hats off to reading!” on Tuesday where the students will be able to bring in their favorite hat to wear while reading. In Church History, we are continuing learning about the spread of Islam and how that impacted the Christian church. In Math, we have started our fraction unit, where we will be looking at common denominators and comparing and ordering fractions. In LA, we are working our way through “Underground to Canada” and have reached the midpoint of the book. We hope that you have an enjoyable extra long weekend. We look forward to seeing

Everyone back on Tuesday.  CVA/TB

Grade 7

While the LORD has re-established the throne of David, next week in Bible History there are the matters of Sheba and Adonijah. In L.A. we will begin our study of poetry. We will wrap our study of plane geometry in Math and then move on to coding. The big focus next week will be the Science Fair. An earlier message was sent out outlining the details for next week; the most important detail being that the students bring their completed projects to work, including apparatuses/experiment aids etc., next week Tuesday morning. Enjoy your long weekend.

Grade 8

We enter the Family Day long weekend with much of our energy and focus on the Science Fair next week! Students are reminded to bring everything in on Tuesday morning for setup in the Gym. This past week the students enjoyed a trip to Guido for Gr. 9 orientation. It’s also our understanding that registration was due this past week as well. Basketball and play practices continue into next week and that means the students have, ‘a lot of balls up in the air’ and some are struggling to juggle it all. As teachers we endeavor to forever remind students and most everything is announced with plenty of headsup. Perhaps also ask the students to see if they can survey or sense the several examples of alliteration imbedded in this chronicle piece. Have a blessed long weekend! Cheers, Mrs. Tesfaye, Mrs. Ludwig and Mr. J
