General News

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,… You are serving the Lord Christ.  Colossians 3:23, 24b

We have had an eventful week here at JCCS!   We are in the middle of our reading weeks. A delayed Book Character Day is being enjoyed today.  It is great to see all the creativity that has been displayed. Students are busy reading to get 200 hours of reading per class.  The Lego blocks are stacking up by the office as we enjoy some friendly competition.

The Science Fair open house was held on Thursday night.  It was good to see a good turnout.  Congratulations to all the students who put so much effort into these projects.  The top students will be going to Maranatha Christian School in Fergus to compete at a final provincial level on April 22nd.  You will see a list of our winners elsewhere in this publication.

This week we will be collecting money as part of the Toonies for Anchor. The Anchor Association started in 1976 and has grown to five homes over the past 47 years. We pray that a week of awareness of the beautiful work that is done in these homes helps in the education of the students here at JCCS.  You will have an envelope come home and you can tuck a Toonie in it and send it back.  Your donation will help support the work done here.

This coming week we hope to have a more regular week. One main highlight will be having guest readers come to the classrooms to read a favourite story.  We have quite a few people lined up to read.  If you feel the desire to do so please contact the classroom teacher and book a time.  All will enjoy it.

We have begun our work on practicing for the school concert.  It will be held on May 25 and 26.   Save the date!   The students sound wonderful!

On Tuesday Mrs. Blokker will be celebrating her birthday.  We give thanks for the work that she is doing and pray for continued blessings in her task here and at home.

I believe that is all for the week.   May God refresh us through the proclamation of His Word this weekend!

Kindergarten

What a great start to “I Love to Read” week! The students loved coming to school wearing their hats, snuggling with their blankets and stuffies/pillows. KB was able to dress up as a book character. There were Elsas, firemen, police officers, rabbits, Papa Bear, Calvin, Annas, Fancy Nancys and so much more! KA will be participating in book character dress up day on Thursday March 2. Please continue to read with your child and colour in the bricks for every 20 minutes that your child reads. We haven’t been able to put up a single brick in the hallways! Let’s go, Kindergarten. In Language Arts, KB was able to read their very first book independently! They practiced reading to each other as well as to the Grade 5A class! Thanks for reading with us, Grade 5A. Next KA will be reading their very first book! In math we continue to work on learning the skill of addition! The students have a good grasp of this concept and are beginning to do this independently. Next week we look forward to having many guest readers coming to our classroom to read to us! Thanks so much to our guest readers! Have a good weekend everyone. SV/JB

“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them a light has shone.” Isaiah 9:2. Our text is a great reminder of our Saviour being the light of the world and directing our path. Students have been busy in grade 1! We are starting our next unit in CKLA: Fables. As our students become more comfortable with reading, we encourage you to keep practicing at home! In math we are also starting a new unit. In science, we are learning about changes and have a project in the works with potentially another grade.

Memory work: Psalm 93:4, Isaiah 9:2

Spelling words: day, dawn, did, get, long

Have a great week! KK/EVG

Grade 2

We have finished a short and busy week at school! The students have enjoyed dropping everything and reading as well as dressing up for book character day! Next week we are looking forward to some guest readers coming in!

This week we have been working on double digit adding with regrouping in Math. It’s very important for the students to keep practicing their math facts to help them complete their day to day seatwork. We have finished learning about Polycarp in Church History and are looking forward to stories about Martin Luther next. Have a great weekend and a blessed Sunday! RG/BV

Grade 3

Grade 3 had a lot of special activities this past week. We could Drop Everything And Read at random times. We saw a lot of fun hats worn on Tuesday. The children cozied up with their blanket, stuffie and pillow and read. And of course, we had our book character day. A big hand of applause to the organizers; we had a LOT OF FUN! We will continue with some more activities next week. Yes, we did work as well. We could stand in awe of how the LORD used His mighty hand to demonstrate His power before Pharaoh. In Science, we learned about heat and how the Lord is in control of even the smallest particles. Working with nickels, dimes and quarters can be tricky, but we are getting there counting by 5’s, 10’s, and 25’s and counting on. Next week, we hope to add the big bucks to our ‘money stash’. We hope the grade 7 and 8 students had a great time during the Science Fair! Wishing you a wonderful weekend and a blessed Sunday.

What an exciting week this has been! All the students participated in the activities and were very happy to drop everything and read! Next week the fun will continue with buddy reading with the grade two class. We plan to have a Bible test on Friday to wrap up Unit 4. Devotions for next week are as follows: 5A Michael (M), Ryan (Tu), Sawyer (W), Sophia (Th), Ashleigh (F) and for 5B Azlynne (M), Quinten (Tu), Elyse (W), Leena (Th), Thomas (F). Grade 6

It has been a fun week in Grade 6 with “Book Week”. Overall, I would say it has been a great success getting students to get  excited about reading. “Book Week” continues next week with some buddy reading along with the reading contest. Please encourage your children to take the time to sit down for 20 minutes or so and read! Regular scheduling will also continue next week. We are coming to the end of our immune system unit and will be moving on to our nervous system. We also continue learning skills in basketball in Phys. Ed, the spread of Islam and the effect on the Christian church in Church History, the underground railroad in Language Arts, and fractions in Math. Have a great weekend! TB/CVA

Grade 7

The big event this past week was the Science Fair. It was great to see the projects progress from preliminary stage to completion and presentation. Thank you to all the judges and also the parental involvement that resulted in students developing their God given talents and abilities. Our Bible History unit on King David comes to an end with the LORD’s promise that his son will replace him. We’ll see how Solomon’s reign will foreshadow the glorious reign of Christ; but first Ulrich Zwingli and the Reformation in the Swiss Confederation. Our God is a God of order and this became especially apparent as we used the same basis/formulas for determining various measurements of surface area and perimeter. Enjoy your weekend.

Grade 8

Grade 8 would like to extend a thank you to all who were involved in the various ways for the Science Fair. We appreciate your time and willingness to help out! In math, we have just finished a unit on solving inequalities and algebraic equations. Next we hope to have a small unit on Financial Literacy which will take us to March Break. Count on a Poetry Test on Wednesday next week and a Geography test Chapter 5 on Thursday. We are in the middle of a Church History Unit on the Reformation in Scotland. Wishing you all a blessed weekend, MJ, AL, RT
