General News

My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour…, Luke 1:46b-47

We are heading into the last full week of April.  This month has been a busy one which has been full of learning.  It is nice to have full weeks where chunks of the curriculum can be delivered as we continue our learning during the year.

We will celebrate some more birthdays this week.   Mrs. DeVries who has been ably helping in the office will celebrate her birthday on Sunday!  We wish her a happy birthday!  We also have Mrs. VanAndel celebrating her birthday on Wednesday.  We wish her continued blessing and strength with her task.

On Wednesday we will celebrate another School Spirit Day.   This dress-up event will have students dress to illustrate the many careers that colour our world today.   It should be a fun way to brighten our day!

Wednesday is also on my calendar as Administrative Professionals’ Day.  I’d like to thank Mrs. D’Addazio and Mrs. DeVries for ably taking care of things in the office here at JCCS in Mrs. Elgersma’s absence.  We give thanks for their work and pray that God will continue to sustain Mrs. Elgersma on her road to recovery.

June 7th will be the Regional Track Meet for grades 7 & 8.  This will be held at Mowhawk Sports Park.   The event will take place earlier in the day with the first events at 8:30.   With this change parents will be requested to bring their children to the event.   There will not be any bus service to or from this event.   I hope the early heads-up helps with your planning.

I believe that is all for this week

Classroom News

Kindergarten

It was a rainy wet week for kindergarten. This is a reminder to parents that if your child comes home with wet or muddy clothes, please send back the clothes and especially the socks. If you have borrowed extra socks from my classroom supplies, please return them asap. In Bible we have started learning about Hannah and Samuel. Next week we will start learning about Saul and David. In math we continue to learn about addition while reviewing patterns, sorting and graphing skills. Here’s a look at next week: Monday – SH: Silas; Tuesday – SH: Leo; Wednesday – library day; Thursday – SH: Josh; Friday – SH: Rosa. Have a good weekend. JB

Grade 1

Grade 1 has had another enjoyable week of school. Grade 1B enjoyed a pj day with crazy hair styles to celebrate Mrs. Poort’s birthday. Grade 1A got to meet some very sweet little kittens as part of show and tell.   In Language Arts, we have been reading about creatures that live at the zoo. The students are loving this unit and get very excited when a new chapter is read. In math, we are becoming quite adept at naming fractions and understanding what they mean. In Social Studies, the students learned about Sir Isaac Brock and his contribution to Canadian history. Did you know Brock was buried 4 times?  Next week we look forward to career dress up day on Wednesday. It’ll be so much fun to see how they choose to dress! Have a blessed weekend!

Grade 2

Grade 2 has been busy in our Science unit learning about Simple Machines and Movement. This week we focused on the screw as a simple machine. Fun to watch the students learning about this design in using it to screw on the lids of their water bottles and in light bulbs as well. We look forward to learning about the pulley and its purposes and we will focus on the impacts that simple machines have on our lives. In our Language Arts classes, we learned about media and how we are to think critically about the media in our lives. The students had many questions about using the internet and were eager to share about the rules in their homes regarding screens and websites. Next week we will turn our studies back to our core Language program. That’s all for this week! Have a blessed weekend!  BV&MB

Grade 3

We are at the end of another week of learning, and it was definitely FULL of learning! Grade 3 is working very hard on long division. Practicing at home would be very helpful (divide, multiply, subtract, bring down, repeat)! We continued our studies about structures. In Bible, we saw how the Lord continued to use Moses as a leader among his people. The 10 commandments were given as instructions for the lives of the Israelites, but also us today. What a great reminder of why we hear them each Sunday again. Next week we look forward to Career dress up day on Wednesday and, of course, more learning! 🙂 See agenda for spelling words.

Memory work: Psalm 61:1 and text Psalm 23:4-6

Grade 4

Regular classes continue this week in Grade 4. Grade 4A started their novel study on King Arthur, and have done an excellent job connecting characters from other movies or media to the novel! This is a great novel study to do leading up to Medieval Day. Both classes have been busy creating slideshow presentations for different habitats and ecosystems. The in-class presentations are starting soon and are going very well! Excellent improvements in computer literacy have been made. Thank you to all parents who have signed up for food! If you have not yet done so, please do so that we can mark this as “complete”! If you have any questions or concerns, please message one of the teachers. The sign-up sheet asking for volunteers for June 6th will be emailed home in the near future.  Have a great weekend,

Grade 5

5A continues to learn about the death and resurrection of Christ, and 5B will be learning about the early Christian Church. This past week, we finished the Social Studies unit about Ancient Egypt. Up next, we will be learning about Space! 5B has already begun and 5A is following a few days behind. The students are creating beautiful works of Pointillism art, and we hope these will be completed this week.

Devotions for the week are as follows: 5A – Isaiah (M), John (Tu), Samuel (W), Alyssa (Th), Kalyin (F). 5B- Amryn (M), Jodine (Tu), Ezra (W), Cason (Th), Mark (F)

Grade 6

The highlight this week was the ball hockey tournament. All the students that wanted to play were allowed to play. The rest of the students watched. It was a fun filled day with an outdoor and indoor arena and good competition. It was very exciting to score 4 goals in the final game. Thanks to Mrs. Stieva for driving us. We are close to finishing our unit on matter. The students will be making an ad using the information gathered on the element they researched. Have a blessed weekend. TB/CV

Grade 7A

Next week in Physical Geography we will explore renewable, nonrenewable and flow resources as well as the terms, “sustainability”, “ecological footprint” and “Human Development Index”. We will be sure to examine the terms through Reformed Christian lenses. After a Ch. 9 quiz in Science we will move on to the next unit, “Pure Substances and Mixtures”. Jean Cauvin had plans to stop in Geneva on his way to Strasbourg, but William Farel had different plans, more about that next week as we learn about Calvin’s first stay in Geneva. We’ll bring our Math study of measurement, customary and metric to a close and move on next to financial literacy. Enjoy your weekend.

Grade 7B

We finished up our printmaking assignment in Art and they have been hung up in the hallway. Well done grade 7, they all look so good! Chapter 7 math tests have been marked and there are a few more that need to be signed and returned. Please have those back to school by Monday. We continue working with proportions in chapter 8 as we look at the metric and imperial systems of measurement. In Science we are continuing to work with Thermal energy and how it gets transferred throughout a system. A key terms quiz for chapter 9 is on the radar for the end of next week. In Phys Ed we are turning our attention to training for the upcoming track and field event in June. There have been some changes to the start and end times for the day, so stay tuned for more information on this!

Have a great weekend! MJ, AL, MdB

Grade 8

We had a great class trip to see the Toyota Plant and Buist Farms on Wednesday this week. In Bible, we are now transitioning back into Church History Reformation of Holland, which should help us get a better perspective of where we come from. Book Reviews for our novel study Shattered were due today, so next week, we intend to start another novel study. For geography, we have transitioned into chapter seven. In math, we can count on several small pop quizzes on solving and graphing linear functions. Have a great weekend, RT, AL and RV
