General News

My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour…, Luke 1:46b-47

We have had a busy week of learning here at JCCS. This stretch of the school year has 6 weeks of uninterrupted learning so we can continue to get bigger chunks of curriculum taught.

We look forward to sharing our learning with everyone at our Annual Open House on Friday. This is a wonderful opportunity to open our doors and share the glorious tasks that we have here at JCCS.  Working hand-in-hand with parents we share God’s glorious promises and his wonderful knowledge as laid out in the many different subjects.   We do not take for granted what is put into this task.  Our community has worked hard to support this school and its mission in supporting parents in educating these children of the covenant. Grandparents, parents, and friends join us to see what is happening at our school!  What a treat!  The doors will open at 8:00.  There will be recess from 10:00 – 10:30.   At 11:30 we welcome all grandparents to the gym for a tasty lunch provided by the Ladies Auxiliary.

On Friday afternoon we hope to participate in Hike for Hospice.  This annual event has been a nice follow-up to Open House.  After the children have been stimulated mentally by parents and grandparents, and perhaps filled with a little too much sugar, we send them out for a walk!  There is wisdom in this planning!  Students have been busy collecting pledges to meet our $12,500 goal which was set when the ladies from McNally House presented to us.

On Tuesday we hope to have another Early Years Morning.  We welcome all of the preschool children and parents to the gym at 9:30 for some activities and a meet and greet!

As we head into the Spring weather the grade 7 & 8 students are busy honing their baseball skills.  We hope to have the baseball tournament on May 23rd.  We thank our coaches for their time and efforts in this endeavour.

Mrs. D. Ravensbergen will be celebrating her birthday on Sunday.  I am sure that she will celebrate a little more in the upcoming week with the resource students.

Kindergarten

In Bible, we have completed the stories on Samuel and have started learning all about the life of David. In science we are busy finishing our informational books on an animal of our choice. I can’t wait to see the finished products. Here’s a look at next week: Monday – SH: Logan; Tuesday – SH: Theo; Wednesday – library day; Thursday – SH: Serayah; Friday – SH: Pierce. Have a good weekend. JB

Grade 1

Wow, there were a lot of career boys and girls in grade 1. It was a lot of fun talking about the careers they chose. We are enjoying the Church History stories about weak and sinful people who brought the gospel to other nations. We have learned about the apostle Peter, and Stephen who was a deacon in the first Christian Church. The children are looking forward to reading stories about the various animals at the Green Fern Zoo. We are learning a lot of facts about these animals. A big THANK YOU goes out to Mrs. Nicole VanderWoude who came to school and taught us about diabetes. This was in connection with our Social Studies unit about famous Canadians.  Frederick Banting and Charles Best discovered the life changing insulin. This was a wonderful health breakthrough for those who live with diabetes. Did you know you have 36 trillion cells in your body? God is so amazing in His creation. In math we have turned to adding and subtracting with bigger numbers. The students love these new math challenges in class. We are looking forward to seeing you at the Open House next Friday. On that same day (in the pm), we hope to hike for McNally House. Jot a note in your child’s agenda if you are able to walk with us. Looking forward to many of you coming along on our hike.

Grade 2

We’ve turned our attention back to the CKLA program to a new unit called Sir Gus in our Language Arts studies this week. The students are excited to read about a knight and look forward to finding out what adventures he will have. They’ve made some guesses about him, but will have to wait and see. We’ll have finished up with our unit on Simple Machines in the next class or so, and will be starting a new unit on Investigating Animals in our Science class. This unit comes with some pretty exciting events and opportunities.  Check your child’s agenda for a volunteer opportunity. Please ask your son or daughter if they have any spare clothes at school, it seems many don’t have extras left here. Enjoy your weekend. BV&MB

Grade 3

What will you be when you grow up?  Lots of choices were displayed on Wednesday!   Thank you, parents, for your great participation!   Kids looked really professional.   We continue to divide, divide, and divide in our math classes.  We even know how to figure out the remainders!  Keep practicing at home too! Strong, stable structures look like something.  Ask us about what we’re building in grade three? On Tuesday, there will be a Bible test. Bible notes will come home on Monday.  Please take the time to study, grade three.

Grade 5 had the chance to mummify an Egyptian doll as a final activity for our Social Studies unit on Ancient Egypt today. 5B has finished Chapter 8 in Math and will be starting Chapter 9, “Add and Subtract Fractions” next week. Both classes will be starting the next unit in World of Literature (LA), called “Growing & Changing.”

We look forward to seeing many of you at the Open House and Hike for Hospice on Friday! Mrs. deBoer will be teaching 5B on Friday so that Miss VanderLaan can join the other administrators in welcoming people to the school. We would love to have people walk with us for the Hike for Hospice on Friday! If you are planning to walk with our class, please let us know in advance, either by email or in the agenda. The students continue to follow Jamie and Awasin and see how they use the natural resources that God has provided for them to make solutions for their basic needs. We are also learning about the beliefs of the natives which as a good introduction to our next unit on the aboriginals. We look forward to having visitors in our classrooms next Friday morning. For the McNally walk make sure to dress according to the weather. Do not bring any money collected until after the walk.

Have a blessed weekend.TB/CV

Next week we will transition into our new Math unit, “Foundations in Personal Finance”. This program is based on the economic principles outlined by Ramsey Solutions and we’ll begin with an introduction to Dave Ramsey and Ch. 1 “Saving and Budgeting”. Things are heating up in Science as we create our “Thermal Energy and Heat Technology” unit activity, a pizza box solar oven; s’more details to follow. We’ll wrap up our poetry unit in L.A. with a young lady, Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout, who would not take the garbage out. In Church History, after having kicked John Calvin out of Geneva, the city wants him back; what happened and will Calvin return? Enjoy your weekend.

Grade 7B

In Church History we have begun our unit on the reformer John Calvin. After spending some time looking at the early years of his life we have now moved on to look at how he impacted church life and church order and how we can see his influence in our lives today. We are looking forward to welcoming parents and grandparents into the classroom next week to help us dig deeper into the lives of those who helped shape our Reformed churches today.

Reminder: Geography quiz on Wednesday

Have a great weekend!
