My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour…, Luke 1:46b-47

Another week has flown by.  This is the last full week before the Victoria Day long weekend.  How time flies.   We are enjoying the weather and the beautiful greens of spring.

We had the opportunity this past week to enjoy the School Review Team at our school.  They consisted of Mr. Hans Van Dooren, Mr. Richard Hoeksema, Mrs. Ilse VanderMeulen and Mr. Ken Leffers.  We look forward to the report that will be compiled as a result of the findings.  This all helps in making a good thing better.  May God bless this work.

I’d like to place a written reminder that the tree line does have poison ivy in it.  If you wish your child not to have poison ivy, please instruct them not to play in that area.

May God continue to bless you in your tasks,

JVI

Kindergarten

On Thursday we had an Ascension Day assembly. Thank you to Rev. Wynia who came and spoke to us about the meaning of the Ascension Day for God’s covenant children. The students worked very hard on completing their Mother’s Day gifts and they are so excited to share these gifts with their mothers. Happy Mother’s Day to all! This week the kindergarten students learned a new math concept: subtraction. They learned how subtraction works using play doh and Fruit Loops. Ask your child how they did this! In just a few short days the students have learned how to do subtraction using number lines. We will continue to work on this concept for the next 2 weeks. In Language Arts the students are working through reading their third story. They are becoming emergent readers. Next week will be a busier week as we are looking forward to our Teddy Bear Picnic on Wednesday. Students are invited to come to school in their PJs and to bring in 1 teddy bear to help us celebrate this day. Here’s a look at next week: Monday – SH: Avery; Tuesday – SH: Addison; Wednesday – Teddy Bear Picnic, library day; Thursday – SH: Noah; Friday – SH: Lennon. Have a good day. JB

Grade 1

It was a busy week. Visitors came and went. We could also celebrate Mrs. Boersema’s birthday in class. We are currently learning about Martin Luther in Church History. We stand in awe of how the Lord uses weak and sinful people from all times and places to gather a Church for Himself by His Word and Spirit. Our factual stories about the animals in the Green Fern Zoo keep us very busy. Did you know a rattler has patterns on his scales to help him blend in with the sand? God’s creation is definitely shown in these stories. We are learning to add and subtract with larger numbers, and wow, the children are enjoying the challenge. In Science we learned about the different types of materials (substances) structures are made of. Did you know a pencil, and a spoon are structures? A big thank you to all who could come and walk with us this past Friday. We couldn’t have done it without you. Please send the pledges for McNally House along with your child as all the monies will be picked up on Friday, May 17, by Ms. McPherson from McNally House. Wishing all moms a happy Mother’s Day. May God bless you in your task of raising your children in the fear of His Name.

Grade 2

Good afternoon! We are so thankful for the beautiful sunshine we could have this week! Grade 2 has been learning about habitats in Science in connection with our Investigating Animals unit, and we could spend some time outdoors exploring habitats. We are looking forward to our field trip to Toronto to Ripley’s Aquarium! If you haven’t officially heard from us that you have been selected to chaperone on the trip, then we again thank you for volunteering, but only a few volunteers could come with us. In our Bible/Church History Lessons we continue to study the stories of Paul and his missionary journeys. Once again, we’ve got a number of viruses in the school right now, and our tissue supply has been depleted once more. If you are able to help us out by providing a box or two, we would greatly appreciate it. Have a good weekend! BV&MB

Grade 4

Thank you, Rev. Wynia, for leading us in an Ascension Day assembly this week! Grade 6

Another busy week goes by in Grade 6 as we inch closer and closer to the end of the school year. This week we were able to remember the ascension of our Saviour on Thursday with a wonderful presentation by Rev. Wynia. In Language Arts, we continue working our way through “Lost in the Barrens”. Both Grade 6 classes are going to move into our final Church History Unit, looking at the forerunners to the reformation. Next week Tuesday we look forward to our class trip to Crawford Lake for our Social Studies unit on the Aboriginal peoples of Canada. A reminder for students that there are to be no electronic devices on the bus and that they should bring a non-microwavable lunch. Have a great weekend! TB/CVA

Grade 7A

Next week in Science we’ll be introduced to mixtures and pure substances as well as new terminology such as homogenous and heterogenous. “Foundations in Personal Finance” will warn us about credit and debt and avoiding dangerous money traps. The “distinct society” of Lower Canada feels threatened in History class and we’ll learn of the Patriote’s response to assimilation… some things never change. Did John Calvin really order the death of a heretic who denied the Trinity, or was there a deeper plot to have Calvin defamed? We’ll investigate the Michael Servetus affair next week. Enjoy your weekend.

Grade 7B

A beautiful May week has flown by! This week we intentionally dug into our novel study, ‘The Hobbit’. We met Bilbo, Gandalf and the dwarves; saw them begin their unexpected journey and run smack into a trio of trolls! Today we are off on the 2nd leg of our 1812 battlefield tour. Have a blessed weekend! Mr. J

Grade 8

Another full week in the books! We are now in the home stretch for many of our subjects and thinking and planning for Ottawa and graduation is in full swing. Be sure to check your emails in these coming weeks, as it is our best way to pass on information. Count on a Church History test on the Netherlands on Thursday. Tuesday, students are required to submit a 5-paragraph essay on either the pros or cons of early exposure to technology in children. We have been reading through a fascinating novel on the Vietnamese boat people, and students are designing a graphic novel on a chapter to show comprehension. In Geography, we are jumping into how God uses NGOs. Have a great weekend, RT, AL and RV
