General News

“Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” Eph. 6:11

Another week has flown by. The baseball tournament that was scheduled for Saturday had to be postponed, which was a wise choice given how much it rained. However, this past Wednesday turned out to be a wonderfully sunny day for the rescheduled games. Our teams were capably led and performed exceptionally well. The boys team and the mixed team both brought trophies home, while the girls team came very close, finishing in a strong second place. Well done, Defenders!

This coming week brings us into the month of June. We welcome the warmer weather and the final weeks of the school year.

We will start the week with a professional development day on Monday, where staff will begin preparations for the final report cards that are due to come out in just a few weeks.

We also have a number of staff birthdays to celebrate this week. Mrs. Vis celebrates on Sunday, Miss Aalbers on Thursday, and Mr. Jongsma on Saturday. We give thanks for the dedicated work they do here at our school and wish them the LORD’s blessings in the upcoming year. I am sure their students will help them celebrate in their classrooms.

On the athletics front, grade 7 and grade 8 students will head out to Mohawk Sports Park on Friday for the annual track and field meet. We wish them much success as they challenge themselves and strive for personal bests in their respective events.

In administrative news, we are finalizing the remaining pieces of our hiring for the next school year. We are pleased to announce that we have hired Miss Selena VandenOever as an educational assistant. She will be stepping into the role to cover for Mrs. McKenzie, who will be going on maternity leave this July. We wish Mrs. McKenzie and her husband many blessings as they prepare to welcome their new little one.

May God grant you all a restful and rejuvenating weekend, steeped in His Word.

Classroom News

Kindergarten

It was a shorter week in Kindergarten. On Wednesday, we welcomed the new Kindergarten students to JCCS! It was a great day for students and teachers to get to know each other. We had fun visiting the other classrooms and searching for the hidden foods that the Hungry Caterpillar ate. We are looking forward to our Happy Rolph’s and splash pad trip on Wednesday! Let us know if you would still like to join us on the trip, the more the merrier 🙂 Wednesday will also be our last day to check out library books. In Language Arts, we are enjoying all the stories in our Kit reader. It is exciting to see how far the children have come in their reading skills! Our Bible stories are about the miracles Jesus performed, and even the familiar stories amaze us each time as we learn about God’s power. Mrs. Vis will be celebrating her birthday this weekend, and KB had fun celebrating today. Please check your June calendars, as there are a few school day changes due to play day and the year-end trip. Have a great weekend. DV/MV

Grade 1

We were very happy to welcome Mrs. Boersema back to school after her surgery! The students were excited to see her again, and we are thankful she is recovering well. In Bible, we learned about Kings Hezekiah and Josiah and how they sought to serve the Lord faithfully. We also studied the exile of Judah to Babylon and heard the dramatic stories of Jonah. In Math, we explored coordinates on a graph. Many students were excited to discover that graphing points is very similar to playing Battleship! Others are now quite interested in learning how to play the game themselves. In Social Studies, we are wrapping up our mapping unit. It has been a very enjoyable topic to study. A highlight for many students was exploring Google Earth and locating our country, province, towns, and even some of our own homes!

Grade 2

This week we’ve enjoyed some more countdown activities in grade 2, as we count down to the last day of school! We had a random art activity, a brain break day, and a chance to wear blue and bring our stuffies. The students are excited to see what each day’s activities will be! We are still making our way through our last reading unit on Sir Gus. In Bible, we are continuing to learn about Paul and his missionary journeys. In Math, we’ve begun our unit on fractions. Have a great weekend and a blessed Sunday!

Grade 3

With the month of May behind us, we are looking at just one more month of school! There will be many fun and exciting events this month, including our field trip to African Lion Safari, Play Day, as well as wrapping up a number of units. Keep an eye out for more information about these events. Students are full tilt ahead, attempting to finish up their phonics and penmanship workbooks. It is great to see their enthusiasm for learning and completing their work continue right to the end. Keep up the great work everyone! We hope to finish up our Bible unit this week but there will not be a test on this unit. Next, we will look at the stories surrounding God’s servant, Joshua.

Grade 4

Thank you, Mrs. Poort, Mrs. Schulenberg, and Mrs. Vis, for your help on Thursday. We had beautiful weather and a wonderful time exploring Lake Erie, River’s Edge, and spending time with the Beacon residents.

Looking ahead to next week, we will be wrapping up our math unit on temperature and time. After that, we will conclude the year (which feels strange to write!) with a unit on decimals.

In Language Arts, we will be finishing our wonderful novel, Charlotte’s Web. We will celebrate with a Charlotte’s Web-themed day – details will follow soon.

In Phys. Ed., students are welcome to bring their baseball gloves, as we will be practicing throwing, hitting, and catching.

In Music, students have been working hard to learn the different notes on the recorder and hope to someday join the Guido Band, whom we had the pleasure of enjoying this week. There are still a few students working their way up in Recorder Karate. We’d love to see one final push at the end of the year to demonstrate mastery of the seven notes learned this year.

Have an amazing weekend, everyone!

Grade 5

The sunshine and warm weather has been such a blessing this past week as we continue to do the work that God has set before us. We are so thankful for this beautiful weather after a lot of rain these past couple weeks! We have a bit of a short chronicle this week as there are no major events going on. Both classes will be moving on to Lesson 5 in Church History where we will learn about the fall of Jerusalem. 5A will be starting unit 13 in math and 5B hopes to wrap up unit 10 this coming week. 5B looks forward to making pizzas on Thursday to wrap up their French unit on pizza! Parents, please make sure to check the agendas for other things going on during the week and also help your child prepare for their assigned day for lunch devotions. We hope that the students have a great long weekend and spend lots of time enjoying the sunshine and warmth! Devotions for next week are as follows:

5A: Jackson (Tu), Quinn (W), Noa (Th), Edwin (F)

5B: Shepherd (Tu), Taryn (W), Elias (Th), Phoenix (F)

Have a great weekend and a blessed Sunday! CDV/KV

Grade 6A

Next week we plan to start our final novel study on Island of the Blue Dolphins. We also plan to start helping the grade 2 students with researching an animal. In Math we will be working with mean, median, mode, and range. This past Tuesday we enjoyed the Guido band and choir presentation. Have a blessed weekend! CVA MJ

Grade 6B

We are limping along into next week!

Grade 7A

Another busy week in Grade 7A with luncheons, tournaments and bands. We’re right on track for next week’s tournament as we continue to practice and fine tune our technique. In math we’ll attempt to make the rather abstract and nondescript topic of insurance more interesting and applicable. We’ll see why Calvin is the perfect fit for the church in Strasbourg in church history. In geography we’ll go with the flow as we move on to another type of resource. Enjoy your long weekend.

Grade 7B

This past Wednesday, while the baseball teams were away, the other students were given the opportunity to visit Anchor Home. It was a very enjoyable time spent serving our neighbours by playing games, reading stories, and singing together.

After the upcoming PD day on Monday, we will be pushing hard to accomplish a lot of work in a short time. We have learned about John Calvin’s first time in Geneva; next week we will be looking at the Lord’s work through him during his second time there. We are progressing through The Hobbit, and hope to cover another 3 chapters. In history class, we will cover the rebellions in Upper Canada and the changes brought about after these rebellions.  Have a great week! RK

Grade 8

It’s hard to believe, but next week is our final week before we leave for Ottawa! That also means we have only three teaching days left.

Congratulations to our baseball teams, who all performed extremely well in the tournament on Wednesday! The boys and mixed teams are bringing home trophies, and the girls played a fantastic tournament, ending with a heartbreakingly close loss in the finals.

Please note a few key items for the upcoming week:

  • Monday: Students will enjoy an extra day off for their long weekend while teachers are at the school for our PD day.
  • Friday: We are looking forward to Track and Field. More details about the day will be shared as the week progresses.
  • Saturday: A quick reminder that we will be loading up the trailer for Ottawa from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM. Please make sure everything is packed and ready to go!
